We are looking for a senior technology leader to own the technical strategy and modernization of our Credit Card Payments domain.

This leader will establish the architecture and engineering roadmap to improve payment resiliency on our existing vendor infrastructure while progressively building a modern payment orchestration capability.

The role requires a combination of deep engineering leadership, payments domain expertise, architecture judgment, and the ability to work across Product, Business, Operations, Risk and enterprise technology teams.

What You’ll Own

Own the end-to-end technology strategy across four core payment capabilities:

  • Customer Intent – reliably capture and persist what the customer intends to pay, independent of downstream vendor availability.
  • Payment Processing – orchestrate payment execution, routing, retries, idempotency, status management and vendor integration.
  • Payment Reconciliation – ensure payments are accurately reconciled across OneMain, vendors and payment rails, with strong exception management and auditability.
  • Payment Posting – ensure payment outcomes are accurately reflected on the customer’s account, including balances, available credit, reversals and adjustments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the short- and long-term Payments technology strategy and target architecture.
  • Lead near-term efforts to improve resiliency while existing vendors continue to provide core payment processing capabilities.
  • Establish a payment orchestration layer that progressively decouples customer experiences from vendor-specific implementations.
  • Own technology decisions across the complete payment lifecycle—from customer intent through processing, reconciliation and posting.
  • Identify failure modes and design for retries, recovery, idempotency, observability and operational resilience.
  • Establish canonical payment APIs, events, states and domain boundaries.
  • Lead technical discovery and translate findings into an executable modernization roadmap.
  • Partner with Product and Business leaders to identify payment capabilities that improve customer experience and operational outcomes.
  • Develop the engineering organization and identify talent or capability gaps required to execute the strategy.
  • Provide technical leadership across teams rather than allowing payment capabilities to become fragmented across individual customer journeys.
  • Maintain strong security, risk and regulatory controls across the payment lifecycle.

What We’re Looking For

  • Significant software engineering and technology leadership experience building highly available, distributed platforms.
  • Strong experience with payments, financial services, transaction processing or similarly complex transactional systems.
  • Deep understanding of distributed-system concepts including idempotency, asynchronous processing, event-driven architecture, consistency, retries and failure recovery.
  • Experience integrating with payment processors, banking platforms or other third-party transaction systems.
  • Strong API and domain architecture experience.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity, identify the real problem and establish a clear technical direction.
  • Ability to move between architecture, engineering execution and business outcomes.
  • Strong executive communication and cross-functional influence.
  • Track record of developing strong engineers and technical leaders.

Required Qualifications

  • Five years or more of progressive responsibility as an engineer on development teams directly responsible for building and delivering software-intensive systems.
  • Three years or more in a lead developer, team lead, or comparable engineering leadership role organizing, developing, and mentoring a team.
  • Demonstrated experience leading several engineering teams with differing objectives, developing leaders, and ensuring effective talent planning and execution.
  • Knowledge of technology and management principles involved in planning, organizational change management, resource allocation, leadership techniques, and coordination of people.
  • Proven ability to assess software engineering practices and implement improvements that increase engineering effectiveness, operational efficiency, time to value, reliability, and product quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to technology strategy and planning, translate broader vision into priorities, and drive execution across teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes, evaluate alternatives, resolve cross-team conflicts, and create solutions that can be replicated across teams.
  • Strong communication and influence skills, including the ability to explain complex technology decisions, tradeoffs, risks, and strategy to senior technical and business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of learning, engineering excellence, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep experience in payments, financial services, transaction processing, or other complex, highly regulated transactional systems.
  • Experience with payment orchestration, payment processors, banking platforms, ACH or other payment rails, reconciliation, posting, settlement, returns, and exception management.
  • Experience designing and operating highly available distributed systems, including durable state management, idempotency, asynchronous processing, retries, recovery, event-driven architecture, APIs, observability, and cloud technologies.
  • Experience leading modernization or transformation initiatives from discovery and target-state architecture through executable roadmaps and production delivery.
  • Experience establishing domain boundaries, canonical APIs and events, and architectures that reduce dependency on vendor-specific implementations.
  • Track record of hiring, retaining, mentoring, and growing high-performing engineers and engineering leaders.
  • Demonstrated success partnering across Product, Business, Operations, Risk, Architecture, Security, and external vendors to deliver measurable customer and business outcomes.

What Success Looks Like

This leader will move Payments from a vendor-dependent integrations toward a resilient Payments domain owned by OneMain.

In the near term, success means protecting the customer payment experience from vendor availability and failure scenarios.

Longer term, success means establishing an orchestration architecture where customer intent and payment state are owned by OneMain, vendors provide processing capabilities, and the architecture can support multiple processors or payment rails as business needs evolve.
