We are seeking a strategic Director of Web Experience & Performance to lead the vision, strategy, and execution of our web ecosystem as a critical driver of customer engagement, demand generation, brand experience, and business growth.


This role will report to the Vice President, Marketing Operations within Cengage's Global Marketing Organization, and will lead a global web management and production team.


The Director, Web Experience & Performance will define and advance our web experience strategy, drive performance optimization, lead large-scale transformation initiatives, and build a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement. The role requires a unique blend of strategic leadership, operational excellence, customer-centric thinking, and technical skill.


The ideal candidate has a proven track record of leading high-performing teams, partnering across marketing, product, technology, sales, analytics, and operations, and delivering measurable business impact through modern web experiences. They are equally comfortable shaping long-term vision and rolling up their sleeves to solve complex challenges.


This role requires proven experience using AI, data, personalization, and scaled experimentation to enhance customer experiences and support growth across B2B, B2C, and B2B2C markets.


This is a remote role with occasional travel required.


What you'll do here:

Drive Web Performance and Accelerate Growth


  • Define and evolve the enterprise web strategy, including experience architecture, platform roadmap, governance model, and operating framework aligned to business objectives.
  • Own key web performance metrics including engagement, conversion, customer journeys, acquisition efficiency, and contribution to business growth.
  • Find opportunities to enhance site performance through analytics, user research, behavioral insights, and experimentation.
  • Partner with marketing, product, and analytics teams to establish measurement frameworks and performance reporting.
  • Ensure digital investments are prioritized based on customer impact and business value.

Lead Optimization, Experimentation, and AI Innovation
  • Build and scale an experimentation program across web experiences, customer journeys, content, messaging, and conversion paths.
  • Build optimization vision that weaves automation, predictive insights, content intelligence, personalization, and experimentation at scale.
  • Partner with SEO/GEO, SEM and content teams to maximize discoverability, organic growth, and content effectiveness.
  • Evaluate and implement AI and emerging technologies that can accelerate digital experience innovation, growth, and operational efficiency.

Deliver Large-Scale Digital Transformation Initiatives
  • Lead complex web transformation programs including platform modernization, CMS and site migrations, experience redesigns, and governance initiatives.
  • Partner with technology and product teams to ensure scalable, secure, and future-ready digital platforms.
  • Balance strategic priorities with ongoing operational excellence, and business continuity.

Build and Lead High-Performing Teams
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a global web operations group responsible for production.
  • Establish clear goals, development plans, and success metrics for team members.
  • Recruit and retain top talent while building organizational capabilities for the future.

Skills you will need here:
  • 10+ years of experience leading web, digital experience, optimization, or digital marketing functions, including managing high-performing teams in complex enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated success developing a web conversion optimization strategy and translating vision into measurable business outcomes.
  • Experience leading large-scale web transformation, migration, or consolidation initiatives in enterprise companies.
  • Deep expertise in CMS, asset management, web analytics, customer journey optimization, SEO, experimentation, personalization, digital measurement, and experience management.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled optimization technologies, and modern digital experience ecosystems.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards, privacy regulations, and digital governance.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with operational execution.
  • Strong executive communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience within education, EdTech, SaaS, digital learning, publishing, or content business.
  • Experience supporting B2B, B2C and B2B2C customer journeys and digital experiences.
  • Experience working with global sites and multi-brand environments.

The full base pay range has been provided for this position. Individual base pay will vary based on work schedule, qualifications, experience, internal equity, and geographic location.  Sales roles often incorporate a significant incentive compensation program beyond this base pay range.

In this position,  you will be eligible to participate in the company’s discretionary incentive bonus program.  This position's bonus target amount, which is not guaranteed and is dependent on individual performance and overall company results among other factors, is provided below.  

25% Annual: Individual Target
$138,200.00 - $221,100.00 USD
