The Role

The Vice President (VP) of Engineering, Connected Digital Products is a senior leadership role and will drive the technology strategy, development, and execution of digital and connected product initiatives for Power Tools, including the DEWALT brand. In the near term the leader will have responsibility over the ToolConnect and MSUITE solutions. ToolConnect is a cloud-enabled product that allows professionals in construction job sites to have broad visibility of their DEWALT power tools and how they are being used.  This includes critical data and information regarding job site productivity and safety. MSUITE is a set of cloud-based software suite designed for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) contractors to connect BIM, fabrication, and field teams.

The VP Engineering, Connected Digital Products will lead the standardization of the cloud and application infrastructure for these solutions, seek to add advanced capabilities including analytics, AI and visualization and enhance their current features to drive end-user value through automation, productivity and safety.

Primary Accountabilities

The successful candidate is expected to drive innovation on the connected devices used in the solutions through the evaluation and insertion of novel networking and sensor technologies in the product roadmaps. The VP of Engineering, Connected Digital Products will be expected to create a compelling vision for cloud and AI enabled innovation solutions for DEWALT and the broader SBD portfolio of brands and products. This may include but not be limited to geolocation, authentication, automated ordering, service, and diagnostics and prognostics.

The leader will ensure that AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) technologies are adopted in the customer-facing solutions as well as into the product development processes.  This is a global role that includes engineering and software professionals that work closely with engineering designs teams in multiple locations.

  • Lead the vision, strategy, and execution of digital and connected product initiatives in Power Tools, with a focus on the DEWALT portfolio.
  • Lead a global team in designing, building, managing, and maintaining a complex suite of software, IoT hardware and digital components that deliver data to a suite of cloud services used by workflow applications for BIM, MEP prefabrication, tool asset management, construction anchor design, workforce safety, and more.
  • Lead the architecture and delivery of robust workflow solutions leveraging, Autodesk® Revit® PC based software, AWS & AWS IoT Core cloud environments, short range Bluetooth and LoRa networking tags and microcontroller/microprocessor gateways to ingest, transform, and expose rich data in a secure and scalable manner to our PC, web and mobile applications.
  • Collaborate with Tools & Outdoor (T&O) Product Leadership for the development and implementation of strategic plans that meet or exceed user needs, deliver product performance that drive tool, device and anchor sale.
  • Work in a hybrid Agile format to continuously deliver new and expanded capabilities that complement our ever-growing list of digital & connected DEWALT products.
  • Partner with QA, Performance, Machine Learning, CISO and Customer Application teams to ensure that our quality, cybersecurity, machine learning capabilities, responsiveness, and protections are second to none.
  • Lead the creation of a comprehensive DEWALT digital product platform and suite of services that connect Stanley Black & Decker digital products to an expanding ecosystem of third-party Construction Technology providers.
  • Design, develop and deliver Digital Tagging and Connected Asset Gateways to collect device data for an evolving set of intelligent devices capabilities.
  • Design, develop and lifecycle manage network solutions utilizing Cellular, LPWAN, FSK, BLE, and other emerging wireless technologies that further expand the reach of our connected services globally.
  • Enrich application lifecycle management best practices with a continuous improvement mindset and demonstrate progress through KPI and metrics reporting.
  • As products become enriched with highly desired features and we dramatically expand our digital footprint, lead 24/7 operations and support functions in partnership with our Pune Design center to ensure our delivery teams can focus on high value workflow application customer advances.

Candidate Profile

Stanley Black & Decker seeks a strategic thinker with strong business acumen and a proven track record in driving innovation and operational excellence. The appropriate candidate will bring exceptional leadership and stakeholder engagement skills, thrive in complex, matrixed environments, and is passionate about developing talent and fostering a collaborative culture.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics or related field, Master’s degree is preferred and digital technology certifications are desirable.
  • 8+ years of demonstrated relevant experience in the following areas:
    • Demonstrated ability to co-develop a digital product vision and detailed roadmaps in partnership with product to build solutions serving the construction industry including: IoT, M2M, and Smart Devices.
    • Development and delivery of connected products with End-to-End architecture solutions in AWS IoT Core, Azure, or Google Cloud.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of data security and data integrity in end-to-end digital connected products.
    • Successfully collaborating with external partners, vendors, consultants, and Engineering Service Providers to manage overall delivery.
    • Partnering with Global Sourcing teams to support vendor relationships and assist with contract negotiations and cost management to ensure the best possible cost margins are developed for products and services.
    • Strong global compliance mindset for secure handling, device data, and communication of such data as identified in GDPR, Industry related specifications such as PII, related evolving regulations and company policy.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience demonstrated in the following areas:
    • Ability to lead others and work effectively with users and company colleagues in globally distributed cross functional organization to mature solutions through delivery and post deployment.
    • Strong working knowledge of the entire IoT technology stack including on-device firmware, Gateways, software development, WAN communication and data delivery to the cloud services making data available to applications in the cloud or on mobile devices.
    • Successfully managing, prioritizing, and assessing the impact of all work items, such as new features, defects, including providing the decisions on when to create, fix or defer at the detailed project delivery level.
    • Development of best practices and execution of development leadership, problem solving, and solution deployment.
    • Ability to manage team finances and development resources to meet budget targets and constraints in addition to developing cost models for cloud and web-based products for future product related investments.
    • Leading teams using Object Oriented Programing Principles and experience working to agile methodologies and lean product development.
    • Other experiences that are strong pluses include:
    • Familiarity with existing DEWALT Digital Products including MSUITE BIM & FAB, DEWALT Digital Design Assist (DDA), and Tool Connect.
    • Working with product managers and customer stakeholders to define and track key product performance indicators (KPIs), Product Critical To Quality & release-specific success metrics.
    • Product and Program Management Skills to deliver quality products and services on time, on budget, and compliant with cybersecurity and data privacy requirements.
    • Technical knowledge of the development of microcontroller and microprocessor hardware and embedded solution software.
    • Product Innovation and developing patentable concepts and working knowledge of intellectual property protection.

The Salary range for this position is $375,000.00 - $400,000.00
  • This is the lowest to highest annual full-time salary range we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.
