You will serve as an integral component of the STV traffic engineering team and collaborate with staff across disciplines to deliver high-quality traffic engineering services. The position will focus on technical production—primarily traffic signal design and ITS design—while also supporting broader traffic design elements including signing, pavement marking, and work zone traffic control plans.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, self-motivated professional with strong technical expertise who enjoys hands-on design, problem-solving, and contributing to a collaborative and growing team. There is significant growth opportunity across multiple project types including highway and interchange design, roadway widenings, intersection improvements (including innovative intersections), and multimodal/bicycle/pedestrian improvements throughout STV’s South Region.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing high-quality traffic signal designs, including phasing, timing, detection, communication, and cabinet/controller plans

  • Preparing ITS designs, such as CCTV, DMS, fiber/communication layouts, detection systems, and related field devices

  • Supporting traffic engineering services such as signing and pavement marking design and work zone traffic control plans.

  • Coordinating with multidisciplinary design teams to ensure integrated, accurate deliverables within established schedules and budgets

  • Conducting field reviews, documenting existing conditions, and verifying design assumptions

  • Assisting project managers and senior engineers with development of specifications, quantities, cost estimates, technical reports, and final bid packages

  • Applying NCDOT, SCDOT, MUTCD, AASHTO, and local municipal standards consistently across all work products

  • Providing task-level QA/QC on design components and supporting quality reviews led by senior staff

  • Interfacing with clients, municipalities, and project managers as needed to support project delivery

  • Mentoring junior engineers and technicians by providing technical guidance and design best practices

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required

  • 10+ years of traffic engineering or transportation design experience

  • Strong experience developing traffic signal designs is required

  • Experience with ITS infrastructure and communications design is preferred

  • NC or SC Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; ability to obtain licensure in the Carolinas is required

  • Experience working with NCDOT or SCDOT and local municipalities in the Carolinas is highly desired

  • Proficiency in MicroStation, AutoCAD, and applicable DOT CADD standards

  • Experience with ORD preferred

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work independently while supporting a team environment

Compensation Range:

$95,453.79 - $127,271.72
