Staff Data Engineer - US Remote

PerfectServe is investing in a unified data platform spanning our product portfolio — the data store, the shared taxonomy, and the pipelines that will let the business answer questions across the whole platform. Our architecture team has mapped the high-level direction and target state. The detailed design is deliberately still open.

This is the senior engineering seat that takes it from direction to working platform. You will shape the detailed architecture alongside our architecture team, own the implementation and integration design, and set the engineering standards the team works to — building it with a dedicated team.

We have done real thinking here — the high-level direction and target state are mapped, and the business case is made and funded. What is deliberately not settled is almost everything below that line. We would rather hire someone with strong opinions about it than fill it in ourselves before you arrive.

That is where the consequential decisions live — how entities resolve consistently across a broad portfolio, how time is modeled so a question about last quarter resolves against last quarter's reality, how a metric gets defined once and trusted everywhere. Cheap to get right now, expensive to correct later.

So you get a direction to work from and an architecture team to partner with, plus genuine influence over both. If you would rather bring your experience to bear on a platform while it is being built than inherit one that is already set, this is that role.

• Own the implementation design across the platform — ingestion, modeling, and the surfaces people consume
• Shape the detailed architecture from the high-level direction, working with our architecture team
• Own integration design across a varied set of production source systems
• Build ingestion pipelines from those systems
• Model raw data into business-ready datasets, with one agreed definition per metric
• Set the engineering standards the team works to, including data quality and testing
• Partner with our platform and operations teams on safe, low-impact extraction from production databases
• Work directly with the people who need the data, so what gets built answers real questions
• Mentor data engineers and help shape their work

• Substantial experience building and operating cloud data platforms, ideally including one you designed from scratch
• Comfort making decisions with incomplete information, and the judgement to know which ones are expensive to get wrong
• Deep SQL, and strong command of a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or similar)
• A transformation framework such as dbt, with clear opinions on how to structure a project
• ELT and change-data-capture experience across relational sources
• AWS — read replicas, object storage, and moving data between regions without surprises
• Dimensional or medallion modeling, applied rather than theoretical
• Workflow orchestration (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect or similar) and data quality testing as a habit

• Healthcare data, and experience handling protected health information
• Multi-tenant data isolation
• Semantic layer or metrics layer design
• Modern BI and self-serve reporting tooling

We offer a salary range of $170,000–$200,000 USD per year, with compensation tailored to your background, strengths, and growth potential. This range reflects our commitment to pay transparency and is based on market data, internal equity, and the scope of responsibilities. Compensation is determined by several factors, including experience, skills, and team impact. We regularly review compensation to ensure fairness and consistency.
