Job Title: Staff Applications Engineer

Location: 100% Remote (U.S.)
Position Type: Full-time, Direct W2
Salary Range: $150,000–$190,000 Annually
Experience Required: 10+ Years

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Applications Engineer with 10+ years of professional software engineering experience to provide deep technical leadership across multiple engineering teams and drive the design and execution of complex, cross-functional initiatives. As a Staff Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in defining technical strategy, shaping architecture, establishing engineering best practices, and delivering scalable, high-quality software solutions that support long-term business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the architecture, design, and execution of large-scale, cross-team engineering initiatives from concept through production.
  • Define architectural standards, engineering principles, and reusable design patterns adopted across multiple product and platform teams.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to senior engineers, influencing engineering excellence across the organization.
  • Lead architecture reviews, technical design discussions, and engineering decision-making for mission-critical systems.
  • Translate long-term technology strategy into executable engineering roadmaps and technical initiatives.
  • Drive improvements in scalability, reliability, performance, security, and maintainability of critical applications and platforms.
  • Lead incident response for high-impact production issues and establish processes for continuous operational improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering leadership, product management, architects, and executive stakeholders to align technical strategy with business priorities.
  • Establish and maintain engineering best practices for software development, testing, documentation, CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Conduct code reviews and contribute hands-on development to high-impact components where technical leadership is most valuable.
  • Raise the engineering hiring bar by participating in technical interviews, mentoring interviewers, and improving hiring processes.
  • Represent engineering in cross-functional planning, prioritization, and roadmap discussions, helping stakeholders make informed technical decisions.
  • Author and review architecture documents, technical RFCs, design specifications, and architecture decision records (ADRs) to create lasting technical documentation.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience leading large-scale, cross-functional engineering initiatives.
  • Proven success designing and delivering complex distributed systems, cloud-native applications, or large-scale enterprise platforms.
  • Deep expertise in one or more areas including distributed systems, cloud platforms, microservices architecture, or large-scale data systems.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one modern backend language such as Java, C#, Go, Python, or C++.
  • Extensive experience with system architecture, software design patterns, scalability, reliability, and performance optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring senior engineers and providing technical leadership across multiple engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, observability, monitoring, and operational excellence.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading enterprise-scale platform modernization or digital transformation initiatives.
  • Public technical contributions such as conference presentations, open-source projects, technical blogs, or published papers.
  • Hands-on experience operating and supporting high-scale production systems.
  • Experience influencing engineering organizations, technology strategy, and software architecture across multiple teams.
  • Familiarity with FinOps, cloud cost optimization, and cost-aware engineering practices.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, containerization, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation), and modern cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
