Zachry Engineering Corporation is currently seeking a Senior / Lead Electrical Designer with Power industry experience to join our Electrical Department in Charlotte, North Carolina. This position offers the opportunity to lead electrical design execution on complex power generation, transmission, and industrial projects, working closely with engineers, designers, and project leadership.

Position Summary

The Senior / Lead Electrical Designer is responsible for leading electrical design activities and providing technical direction within the electrical discipline. This role plans, executes, and reviews advanced electrical design scopes, leads portions of large-scale power projects or complete design packages for smaller projects, and ensures compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.

The Senior / Lead Designer exercises considerable judgment in selecting and adapting design methods, serves as a technical lead and design checker, mentors junior designers, and supports constructability, field execution, and project delivery.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute electrical design activities for power generation and industrial facilities in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for electrical design execution within assigned projects
  • Select, recommend, and adapt design procedures, standards, and techniques
  • Prepare, coordinate, and review preliminary and detailed electrical designs for engineering approval
  • Lead and mentor a team of Electrical Designers, supporting workload planning, schedules, and budgets in collaboration with Project and Discipline Leads
  • Perform detailed design reviews and checks to ensure technical accuracy, constructability, and completeness
  • Serve as technical design checker or lead designer for assigned projects
  • Coordinate electrical design activities with engineering, construction, and other disciplines
  • Design and lay out complex electrical systems, including: 
    • Raceway systems (underground ductbanks, cable tray, conduit, and supports)
    • Lighting systems (interior, exterior, roadway, and area lighting)
    • Grounding and bonding systems
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability evaluations, and client meetings
  • Provide field support, including site visits, field verifications, redline and as-built documentation, and retrofit evaluations
  • Support procurement activities, including vendor coordination, submittal reviews, and installation support
  • Ensure adherence to quality, safety, schedule, and project execution standards
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design practices, standards, and processes
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Associate Degree with appropriate drafting and design coursework
  • Minimum 12+ years of electrical design experience, with a strong emphasis on power generation and/or power infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated experience serving in a Senior or Lead Electrical Designer role
  • Strong working knowledge of: 
    • Electrical raceway systems
    • Grounding and bonding
    • Lighting systems
    • Power generation facility design environments
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD tools, including AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable power industry standards
  • Ability to work independently while providing leadership, guidance, and technical direction to others
  • Willingness to travel and work in both office and field environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Associate Degree in a related technical field
  • Experience with AVEVA E3D and/or Bentley MicroStation
  • Certificate in Design or Drafting
  • Experience supporting EPC/EPCM power projects
