We are seeking a hands-on, technically solid Software Engineer who is passionate about building scalable, reliable software solutions that deliver meaningful business and customer value. This role is suited for an engineer who can work independently on well-defined problems while collaborating closely with teammates on larger system designs and AI-driven capabilities.
As a Software Engineer at Optum Technology, you will develop modern full-stack applications using Java, Spring Boot, Python, and Angular/React, deployed on cloud-native systems within Microsoft Azure. You will help build and maintain systems that handle sensitive healthcare data, requiring attention to reliability, security, compliance, and interoperability. You will play an active role in improving system quality, reducing technical debt, and contributing to operational excellence while collaborating closely with product, platform, and SRE partners.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable, reliable full-stack applications and AI-powered solutions using Java, Spring Boot, Python, and modern front-end frameworks (Angular and/or React)
• Build, integrate, and optimize AI models, microservices, REST APIs, and automated pipelines into enterprise cloud-native systems deployed on Microsoft Azure
• Build and maintain secure systems that handle sensitive healthcare data, ensuring strict adherence to reliability, security, compliance, and data standards
• Play an active role in improving system quality, reducing technical debt, and contributing to operational excellence and platform health
• Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline software engineering workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous technical improvement
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and engineering trends to inform solution design, architecture, and strategic technical innovation
• Collaborate closely with product managers, platform engineers, SRE partners, and cross-functional teams with solid communication and a growth mindset

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of software development experience in lieu of a degree
• 2+ years of hands-on software engineering experience developing modern applications using Java, Spring Boot, and Python
• 1+ years of experience working across the full stack, including front-end development with Angular and/or React
• 1+ years of experience building and consuming APIs for cloud-native systems deployed on cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure)
• 1+ years of experience developing, integrating, or deploying AI/ML models, natural language processing (NLP) pipelines, or AI-powered APIs/services into software applications
• 1+ years of experience with database management (SQL or NoSQL) and version control systems (e.g., Git)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
• Experience in healthcare technology and familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards (e.g., FHIR)
• Experience building and maintaining systems handling sensitive healthcare data with focus on high availability, security, and regulatory compliance
• Experience with modern AI/ML frameworks, libraries, and tools (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain, Hugging Face, OpenAI APIs)
• Demonstrated track record of collaborating with product, platform, and SRE partners to improve system quality, reduce technical debt, and drive operational excellence

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $72,800 - $130,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
