Senior ServiceNow Engineer — This is a 100% Remote position

Peraton is seeking a Senior ServiceNow Engineer to design, develop, and support highly customized applications on the ServiceNow platform.

This is a hands-on senior development role requiring strong technical judgment, independent problem-solving, and ownership of outcomes. The successful candidate can take a business need or reported issue, gather and clarify requirements, investigate the existing application, recommend an approach, and deliver a working solution without step-by-step direction.

Our environment includes proprietary applications, custom data models, and extensive Service Portal customization. Most development involves custom solutions. Candidates must be comfortable learning unfamiliar systems, tracing existing code and data relationships, and determining how changes will affect the broader application.

As a senior engineer, you will also serve as a technical resource for junior developers, helping them resolve issues, evaluate approaches, and move work forward.

Be prepared and willing to answer code questions or perform small excercises to prove skillset during video interview.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop custom ServiceNow applications using App Engine Studio and/or traditional scoped application development.

  • Build and enhance custom modules, data models, platform extensions, and Service Portal widgets.

  • Customize and extend existing ServiceNow applications and modules to meet customer-specific requirements.

  • Develop workflows, automation, and integrations with external systems using REST/SOAP APIs and third-party platforms.

  • Write, test, and debug Business Rules, Script Includes, Client Scripts, UI Policies, Flow Designer flows, and Fix Scripts.

  • Develop custom UI components, including UI Pages, UI Actions, and Service Portal elements.

  • Gather and analyze requirements directly with stakeholders, identify gaps and dependencies, and translate business needs into technical solutions.

  • Investigate unfamiliar application behavior by tracing scripts, configurations, tables, and data relationships.

  • Evaluate implementation options and recommend scalable, maintainable solutions aligned with ServiceNow best practices.

  • Own assigned work from initial investigation through development, testing, documentation, and delivery.

  • Collaborate with developers and other team members in an Agile/DevSecOps environment, including story refinement, estimation, and lightweight ceremonies.

  • Maintain and apply knowledge of ServiceNow tables, dictionary definitions, relationships, and the CMDB.

  • Configure and use MID Servers for integrations and data movement.

  • Implement role-based access controls, ACLs, and other platform security configurations.

  • Follow applicable security and compliance requirements, including FedRAMP, DoD, and STIG requirements.

  • Set up and configure ServiceNow instances to support new applications or application migrations, researching unfamiliar setup requirements as needed.

  • Trace data to its source tables and troubleshoot application behavior within a domain-separated environment.

Work Style Expectations
  • Operate with a high level of ownership and autonomy in a fully remote environment.

  • Take initiative to research, investigate, and resolve problems using available documentation, platform resources, and application evidence.

  • Seek clarification and collaborate when needed, while bringing relevant findings, options, or a recommended next step.

  • Identify roadblocks early, communicate their impact, and propose practical ways to move forward.

  • Maintain consistent communication and availability during the business day, including clear updates on progress, risks, and dependencies.

  • Follow work through completion and proactively coordinate the next priority when current assignments are finished.

  • Support a small team through knowledge sharing, constructive technical guidance, and dependable delivery.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years with BS/BA; Minimum of 6 years with MS/MA; Minimum of 3 years with PhD

  • Secret Clearance Required
  • Demonstrated experience developing and supporting custom ServiceNow applications.
  • Strong hands-on experience customizing Service Portal, including widget development and troubleshooting.

  • Ability to understand an existing proprietary application by examining its code, configuration, data model, and business processes.

  • Ability to work from a business objective or problem statement and develop a technical approach independently.

  • Ability to recognize incomplete or ambiguous requirements and ask targeted questions to resolve them.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills, including identifying root causes and evaluating the impact of proposed changes.

  • Ability to provide technical guidance to junior developers and explain implementation decisions clearly.

  • Experience developing workflows, automation, and integrations with external systems (REST/SOAP APIs, third-party platforms)
  • Experience writing, testing, and debugging ServiceNow scripts (Business Rules, Script Includes, Client Scripts, UI Policies, Flow Designer, Fix Scripts)
  • Developing custom UI components (UI Pages, UI Actions, Service Portal elements)
