We are Builders FirstSource, America’s largest supplier of building materials, value-added components and building services to the professional market. You’ll feel proud of the work you do here every day to transform the future of home building and help make the dream of home ownership more achievable. At BFS, we believe building a successful career is not solely defined by a degree. Your experience, skills, and passion are just as important, if not more so. As such, we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace that welcomes candidates from all backgrounds and experience levels.

Builders FirstSource (BFS) is executing Project Elevate, a multi-year business transformation that is standardizing core operations on SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition and connected enterprise applications. The Senior Engineer, SAP Application Development, is a hands-on technical resource responsible for the quality, maintainability, security, and delivery of Project Elevate custom development. This role partners with business analysts, functional leads, architects, security, Basis, testing teams, and systems-integration partners to translate business requirements into clean-core, scalable solutions across SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a BFS technical owner for Project Elevate application development, providing hands-on engineering leadership from requirements and solution design through build, test, deployment, stabilization, and transition to support.
  • Review functional specifications and translate approved requirements into complete technical designs, estimates, development tasks, unit-test plans, deployment dependencies, and support documentation.
  • Design, develop, enhance, and troubleshoot RICEFW objects, including reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms, workflows, Fiori applications, CDS views, OData services, APIs, and related SAP extensions.
  • Apply Project Elevate development standards, naming conventions, documentation templates, security requirements, and code-review checklists across BFS and vendor-delivered work.
  • Champion SAP clean-core principles by prioritizing fit-to-standard, released APIs, zero modification, in-app extensibility, ABAP Cloud/on-stack extensibility, and side-by-side BTP solutions before classical extensions.
  • Develop and support solutions using SAP S/4HANA, ABAP, RAP, CDS, SAP Fiori/UI5, SAP Gateway/OData, SAP BTP, CAP, SAP Build, HANA Cloud, workflows, events, and API-based integration patterns as applicable.
  • Perform or approve peer code reviews and quality checks using tools such as ABAP Test Cockpit, runtime analysis, SQL Monitor, SQL Performance Tuning Worklist, and HANA query-plan analysis; ensure defects, performance issues, security findings, and technical debt are resolved before release.
  • Own development quality for assigned objects and vendor-delivered components, including technical-specification approval, code-review outcomes, documentation completeness, test evidence, transport readiness, and adherence to BFS architecture and engineering policies.
  • Partner with functional leads and business analysts early in solution discussions to evaluate standard capabilities, identify gaps, compare extensibility options, and recommend solutions that balance business value, maintainability, risk, cost, and upgrade compatibility.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, Integration, Security, Basis, Data, Testing, Release Management, and application owners to resolve cross-system dependencies and deliver integrated end-to-end business capabilities.
  • Work with Security teams to incorporate authorization checks, secure coding, sensitive-data handling, workflow controls, segregation-of-duties considerations, and required role or authorization-object changes.
  • Coordinate with Basis and platform teams on environments, connectivity, system performance, background jobs, transports, runtime capacity, monitoring, and technical issue resolution across development, quality, training, pre-production, and production landscapes.
  • Create and execute technical unit tests and support functional unit testing, system integration testing, user acceptance testing, performance testing, regression testing, defect triage, retesting, and release-readiness activities.
  • Prepare solutions for controlled deployment through approved transport and change processes; support cutover, production validation, hypercare, root-cause analysis, and timely remediation of production defects.
  • Maintain traceability and status in approved delivery tools, including requirements, technical designs, build tasks, defects, risks, dependencies, test evidence, approvals, and deployment milestones.
  • Review vendor estimates, designs, code, test results, and delivery plans; hold systems-integration partners and contractors accountable for quality, schedule, knowledge transfer, and compliance with BFS standards.
  • Contribute to reusable engineering patterns, templates, accelerators, automation, technical roadmaps, and continuous improvements to the software-development lifecycle, DevSecOps practices, and release processes.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, troubleshooting guides, and knowledge-transfer materials; share best practices with BFS developers, analysts, support teams, and partners.
  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance to other engineers and development partners while remaining accountable for individual delivery; perform hands-on coding for complex, high-risk, or business-critical work.
  • Communicate technical decisions, progress, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to project leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
