Who we’re looking for

As a Principal Content Designer, you will be part of the Central Design Content Design team and embed in the Yahoo News vertical, which is laser-focused on making discovery delightful, becoming the world’s best curator for our 35 million daily users, and expanding our distribution to more platforms to meet millions more users where they are. 

You’ll work across multiple squads, including those focused on the News app, Games, Weather and the Yahoo Homepage in a fast-moving, dynamic environment. You’ll partner with the design and PM teams to identify and define priorities quarter to quarter, working deep within the News vertical. You’ll review work weekly in meetings with the Content Design team, thinking horizontally across Yahoo verticals to deliver a cohesive experience that reflects the brand voice in the News vertical. You’ll educate partners on horizontal tools, like our termbase and product guidance, and the value that quality content serves in helping achieve our business metrics. 

We’re looking for someone with strong capacity for system thinking and proven experience building scalable content patterns, experience with AI prompt engineering and the capacity for bringing creative ideation toward training AI to add value to the News experiences, a deep understanding of user journey mapping and how to meet their needs along the way, and the capacity for iteration through rapid experimentation and UXR. You'll be able to navigate ambiguity and work constructively with Editors, who share ownership of the News UI. You'll also provide strong rationale for your recommendations to partners and leadership, while remaining flexible and adaptable to feedback and evolving priorities.

 

Responsibilities

Content designers at Yahoo collaborate with partners to define the vision for new features, while owning and driving the in-product messaging, from strategy to execution. Day to day, you will:

  • Turn broad, ambiguous user and business challenges into clear, valuable solutions, often leading content-driven initiatives, including defining problems, aligning stakeholders, and delivering solutions

  • Connect user research and data insights to inform design decisions at every stage of development

  • Develop strategies, create guidelines, and establish best practices for content creation and maintenance

  • Conduct content and competitive audits and optimize existing content to improve user engagement and conversion rates

  • Educate partners and evangelize content design and its value 

  • Partner closely with UXR and product teams to drive experimentation and build user insights

  • Contribute to our content system, including developing frameworks and helping evolve the style guide and voice

  • Mentor and give feedback with emotional intelligence to teammates and cross-functional partners

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience or equivalent in related roles, including significant experience working as a Content Designer for web and mobile applications in a product org

  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and experience working in Agile development environment

  • Demonstrated experience leading content design initiatives and solving user problems in creative ways that go beyond obvious, expected solutions, while taking initiative and accountability for timelines and outcomes

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to create clear, concise, and engaging content for a variety of audiences and a deep knowledge of UX writing best practices

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with cross-functional teams

  • Presents designs clearly and confidently with considered, well-developed rationale to facilitate useful feedback and buy-in while shifting approach based on the audience and desired outcome

  • Experience working with AI both in product development and as a tool for accelerating your work

  • Passion for and understanding of the news and publishing industry

  • Demonstrated examples of contributing to the design community both inside your company and beyond

  • Enjoys mentoring more junior team members, proven ability to grow more experienced content designers, and ability to lead by example to help others adopt best practices

The compensation for this position ranges from $143,625.00 - $299,375.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience.The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions.
