The Construction & Maintenance Department is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Company’s natural gas distribution system.

We are looking for a Pipe Layer VI to join our team!

Important Note: This role is considered safety sensitive, and as such, you may be required to undergo various background screenings. This may include but is not limited to a driving record abstract, criminal check, a company sponsored medical and drug testing.

This position reports to the Company’s Chapel Hill Operations Center located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

What You Will Do:

  • Installs natural gas pipe in ditches.

  • Manually digs around various utilities.

  • Pressure tests steel and plastic natural gas lines.

  • Participates in the repair of third-party damage to natural gas lines and various types of gas leaks.

  • Performs location of natural gas lines and facilities.

  • Completes pipe maintenance activities.

  • Installs test charts.

  • Sets up common Department of Transportation approved work sites.

  • Effectively flags traffic.

  • Safely drives a company vehicle.

  • Maintains the vehicle inventory.

  • Operator Qualifications involve written guidelines and requirements natural gas employees must follow to ensure the safe and responsible operation of natural gas pipelines. Required, annual Operator Qualification testing involves both written and hands-on components to ensure those who perform covered, safety-sensitive tasks on the natural gas system are trained, knowledgeable, and qualified.

Who You Are:

Pipe Layer VI (at least 12 months experience)

  • Completed high school or equivalent (i.e. GED)

  • Possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving history.

  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (strongly preferred) OR able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment.

  • Ability to understand and follow safety and environmental policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Ability to don and be annually fit tested for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment.

  • Knowledge and skill with common hand and power tools (i.e. shovel, screwdriver, pipe wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, etc.).

  • Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive driving procedures.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positive customer and contractor interactions are critical.

  • Ability to work as a team member within a diverse team.

  • Basic computer and internet navigation skills are key.

  • Availability for overtime, as needed.

  • Availability for natural gas emergency response during the workday, as well as in the evenings and some weekends, when on-call.

  • Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Chapel Hill area. Emergency response time is a critical measure for the Company and candidates are required to consistently meet this requirement, including when on-call.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

  • Good mechanical aptitude.

  • Flagger experience and/or certification.

  • Bilingual (Spanish) candidates.

Physical Requirements Include but are not limited to:

Balancing, bending and stooping, climbing, crawling, carrying (up to 80 amount of pounds), grasping, kneeling, lifting (objects 80 pounds), pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement, grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting (objects up to 80 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement.

Mental Requirements (Both field & office) include but are not limited to:

Ability to: understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information, understand complex problems and collaborate/explore alternative solutions, organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize work schedule on a short-term basis, make decisions which have moderate impact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside this area, understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines, complete routine forms, compose letters, outlines, memoranda and basic reports and communicate with individuals via telephone.

Working Conditions:

  • This position typically works within a crew structure.

  • Work is performed primarily outside in varying weather conditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, etc.).

  • Position requires travel throughout the service territory with safe parking in a wide variety of situations and driving in construction zones.

  • Position may encounter agitated/upset customers.
