Pay Scale: 60k-70k

Summary:   The NextGen Database Administrator is responsible for managing the architecture and operations of a multi-practice, self-hosted NextGen Ambulatory Practice Management and Electronic Health Records system. Responsibilities include ensuring high availability of NextGen software and services, performing version upgrades, MS/SQL Server migrations, and optimizing database performance in high-concurrency environments. The role is also responsible for establishing and maintaining Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) interfaces with Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), hospital systems, payer sources, regional practices, laboratories, and pharmacies. Additionally, the Database Administrator supports and maintains other organizational databases beyond the core EHR system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage SQL Server databases supporting the NextGen EHR and PM platforms, ensuring uptime, performance, and recoverability
  • Perform version upgrades of NextGen software and Microsoft SQL Server, including patch management and system testing
  • Monitor system performance and conduct performance tuning for high-concurrency environments
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor EDI interfaces with HIEs, hospitals, labs, payers, and other third-party systems
  • Serve as database administrator for additional organizational systems beyond NextGen
  • Document procedures for backup, restore, disaster recovery, and upgrade processes
  • Any other duties as assigned

Special Attributes: 

  • Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server and database performance optimization
  • Ability to manage multiple complex systems in a healthcare or regulated environment
  • Experience working with EHRs and health data interfaces (HL7, CCD, EDI)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and clinical staff

Qualification Requirements: 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage large, complex relational databases in a production environment
  • Experience with NextGen or other self-hosted EHR platforms strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability and data security best practices
  • Ability to write and troubleshoot SQL queries, stored procedures, and maintenance plans

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a database administrator, with at least 2 years in a healthcare or EHR environment
  • Experience with database design, high availability, and recovery strategies required
