This position will be a key member of the American Express Global Commercial Services (GCS) Line of Business Compliance Team, primarily supporting Small Business Card products. The successful candidate will provide second line of defense compliance oversight for this core area of the GCS business. The compliance efforts for this position will oversee and identify compliance risks related to new/modified U.S. Small Business products, benefits, and reward programs through effective oversight and challenge of product design proposals, marketing approaches and assets (claims/disclosures/guidelines), customer communications, digital experiences, and product servicing processes.  This position will also be an integral part in performing second line effective challenge of Risk & Control Self-Assessments and deliverables related to Compliance Program requirements including periodic Compliance Risk Assessment, Regulatory Change Management, and Issue Management.

Responsibilities
  • Providing 2nd line effective challenge of business proposals with a focus on regulatory and compliance risk.
  • Supporting implementation of policy and regulatory requirements in the areas of UDAP, Fair Lending, Third Party guidance, Accessibility, Privacy, general credit card practices, general banking, and other relevant federal, state and local regulations.
  • Analyzing new and/or enhanced products and services as part of the New Product Development process to assess compliance risks, new/enhanced controls, and ensure adherence with regulatory requirements.
  • Reviewing and providing effective challenge to the business on marketing and advertising material including required disclosures.
  • Reviewing and providing effective challenge of Compliance Issues, Risk Events, and Customer Remediation for timely closure of gaps where required.
  • Participating in the Compliance Risk Assessment process to ensure that the appropriate risks are identified and that the strength of the control environment is evaluated in accordance with Compliance Program standards.
  • Liaising as required with the relevant stakeholders, including but not limited to: General Counsel’s Organization, other Compliance teams, Independent Compliance Testing team, Control Management, Internal Audit, Financial Crimes Compliance, and Privacy Office.
  • Evaluating third-party compliance risk and control environment for vendors contracted to perform product related services on behalf of American Express.
  • Assisting in preparation for regulatory inquiries and examinations.
  • Additional responsibilities based on team needs.
Qualifications
  • Experience in Compliance within the financial services industry.
  • Strong regulatory knowledge of the financial regulations applicable to U.S. credit card products and commercial lending including UDAP, Privacy, Fair Lending, sales and marketing practices, and other relevant banking laws/regulations.
  • Prior credit card industry, compliance, legal, or risk experience is a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of compliance risk management practices and methodologies, including risk and control assessments.
  • Proven ability to build rapport, garner respect and appropriately exercise authority in a collaborative environment.
  • Highly effective communication skills and professional maturity/confidence to present and influence direction on complex processes, risks, and controls with management within Compliance and with the first line of defense teams.
  • The ability to multi-task and prioritize in a highly deadline-intensive environment is required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, research, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degree preferred.
