Calix is looking for a Lead Business Writer, Communications (Remote – USA) who can identify, shape, and write compelling stories for one of our most visible external communications channels: press releases. Calix press releases play a pivotal role in shaping how customers, analysts, investors, media, and the broader market understand our company and the success of our customers, partners, and brand. This means you'll join a small, high-performing communications team with an outsized impact on Calix's external narrative. We care deeply about craft, credibility, and quality. We believe great stories are built through thoughtful reporting, rigorous editing, and relentless revision. This is a role for someone who wants meaningful ownership, visibility, and influence—and who takes pride in producing work that stands up to scrutiny.
We're looking for someone with exceptional editorial judgment; someone who can find stories where others see only information and connect them to meaningful business outcomes. You'll absorb customer interviews, executive perspectives, product strategy, technical information, market context, and sometimes competing stakeholder viewpoints, then determine what matters, why it matters, and how to tell it. You'll own stories end-to-end, from sourcing and interviewing to drafting, executive review, publication, and coordination with our PR agency. Calix embraces the secure use of AI and agentic AI tools as part of the editorial process. We expect this role to have practical experience using approved AI tools securely and responsibly to accelerate research, story development, drafting, and revision. Candidates must demonstrate strong judgment around fact verification, confidentiality, and the appropriate use of AI in professional communications. That said, we are hiring primarily for human judgment, business acumen, reporting instincts, and writing ability.

What You'll Do:

  • Identify customer, product, and business stories with external relevance
  • Determine which stories deserve attention and develop compelling narrative angles
  • Synthesize interviews, presentations, transcripts, data, and stakeholder feedback to develop a strong story thesis
  • Conduct interviews with customers, executives, partners, and subject matter experts
  • Verify facts, figures, claims, and supporting evidence
  • Write customer success, product launch, and corporate press releases with clear, compelling narrative arcs
  • Manage stories through executive, legal, and stakeholder review while preserving narrative integrity
  • Adapt quickly to changing priorities and fast-moving opportunities without compromising quality or accuracy
  • Stay current on broadband, cloud, AI, and competitive industry trends to bring context, perspective, and relevance to every story
  • Bring an editor's perspective to every story, raising the quality, clarity, and strategic relevance of Calix communications
  • Serve as a key editorial partner to Calix's public relations agency, ensuring stories, messaging, and media engagement activities align to business objectives and communication priorities

What You Bring:

  • Exceptional editorial judgment and storytelling ability
  • Proven experience finding stories where others see complexity, ambiguity, or raw information
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to connect technology, product strategy, customer outcomes, and business value
  • Strong reporting instincts, including interviewing, fact verification, and source validation
  • Experience writing about B2B technology, SaaS, cloud, AI, telecommunications, enterprise software, or related industries
  • Ability to quickly understand complex technology portfolios, products, business models, and industry dynamics, and translate them into compelling business narratives
  • Experience using AI and agentic AI tools to support research and content development while maintaining responsibility for editorial judgment and fact verification
  • Confidence working directly with executives and senior leaders
  • Relentless commitment to revision, accuracy, and quality
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills (a writing exercise is required as part of the interview process)
