The Investment Accountant is responsible for the preparation, analysis, and reporting of investment activity in accordance with US GAAP and Bermuda regulatory requirements. This role involves overseeing investment-related journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting, as well as collaborating with key internal stakeholders. The Investment Accountant will assist in the development and enhancement of reporting tools, maintain internal controls over accounting processes, and support both management and external reporting needs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze monthly journal entries to record investment activity for management and quarterly board financial reporting and schedules (US GAAP and Bermuda regulatory).
  • Monitor accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring the integrity of posting and reconciliation of ledger entries (investment, transaction, treasury, and general expenses).
  • Ensure timely delivery of monthly and quarterly financial close processes and reconciliations to meet internal and external reporting deadlines.
  • Prepare investment accounting notes and disclosures for management and external reporting.
  • Liaise with internal investment management teams to support investment analytics.
  • Produce and review internal financial planning and liquidity analysis for management reporting.
  • Assist in the development or enhancement of reporting tools, analyzing and reconciling investment accounting data and analytics.
  • Document, review, and apply internal controls and accounting policies over accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems.
  • Prepare supporting documentation, schedules, and reports for year-end financial statements and external audit requests.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with key stakeholders across the organization, including Actuarial, Investments, and Strategic Initiatives teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Internationally recognized professional accounting designation (e.g., CA, ACCA, CPA).
  • 3+ years of post-qualified accounting or investment accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with investment accounting for US GAAP.
  • Familiarity with a range of fixed income products, including core fixed income, structured products, private assets, and alternatives.
  • Experience with the preparation or review of US GAAP financial statements and BMA reporting, including BSCR.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on continuous improvement in the efficiency and reliability of the monthly and quarterly close process.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience working with general ledger systems, investment accounting software (ideally Clearwater), and financial reporting systems, with the ability to adapt to new technologies.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills. Ability to thrive in a small team within a dynamic environment.
  • Familiarity with investment accounting in life and annuity re/insurance sectors.

  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to distill complex financial information into clear, concise reports for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.
  • Proficiency in investment accounting processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but may involve collaborating and providing guidance to other team members and departments as needed.

Location and Travel

  • Martello Re welcomes applications for remote positions from candidates residing in the Eastern United States or in states where the company currently operates.
