Educator Design and Development (EDD) department plays a key role in the organization’s mission and the overall More IB Strategy. The professional learning provided by IB aims to expand the reach of the IB mission by increasing access to IB professional learning, fostering closer relationships with schools, educators, and leaders throughout their learning journey, expanding beyond the IB market, building educator and school capabilities, and increasing the volume and scale of our portfolio of products to meet the evolving needs of our learners. These services are provided by IB Professional Learning (PL) and IB Educator Certificate. This role has oversight of the strategic direction of both services.
The Head of EDD Portfolio and Services is responsible for executing the strategic direction, composition, and performance of the Educator Design & Development portfolio. This role ensures that IB’s professional learning offerings are innovative, market-relevant, clearly positioned, and financially sustainable, while advancing IB’s mission to develop confident and capable educators across IB and non-IB contexts.
Grounded in the EDD remit as learner-centric innovators, the role leads the portfolio through clear value propositions, differentiated go-to-market strategies, and disciplined portfolio management, ensuring offerings respond to real educator and system needs across the professional journey. The Head of EDD Portfolio plays a critical role in expanding IB’s reach beyond its core programmes, shaping new markets, credentials, and partnerships that position IB as a global leader in educator professional learning and capability development.
ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership
- Ensure the full EDD portfolio across informal and formal learning experiences (resources, communities, learning journeys, workshops, micro-learning, credentials aligned to IB strategy, market demand, and educator impact.)
- Oversees the strategy entering into new, unaffiliated markets, establishing IB PL as a global leader in educator development.
- Define and continuously refine the EDD portfolio strategy, ensuring coherence across offerings, credentials, and learning pathways.
- Lead a strong innovation mindset across the portfolio, promoting rapid prototyping, experimentation, and evidence-based scaling.
- Lead the content strategy to support a freemium offering of content and learning products, ensuring high level of engagement and conversion.
- Ensure the portfolio reflects emerging educator needs, modern learning science, and global trends in professional learning, credentialing, and digital education.
Go-to-Market Strategy & Value Proposition
- Own and articulate clear go-to-market strategies for major portfolio segments, including IB core, adjacent, and non-IB markets.
- Ensure every portfolio strand has a compelling, differentiated value proposition grounded in educator impact and market insight.
- Partner closely with Marketing, Development, Design, and Delivery teams to ensure market readiness, demand generation, and adoption across regions and channels
Education Market Intelligence & Growth
- Build and apply a deep understanding of the global education landscape, including schools, systems, universities, governments, and professional bodies.
- Use market and stakeholder intelligence to inform portfolio decisions, prioritization, and investment trade-offs.
- Drive portfolio growth through new markets, partnerships, and credential recognition, advancing IB’s influence beyond affiliated schools
Product & Portfolio Management
- Oversee the full lifecycle of EDD offerings, from concept and pilot through scaling, evaluation, and retirement.
- Set and monitor success metrics for impact, reach, learner experience, and financial performance.
- Ensure portfolio discipline: clarity of focus, avoidance of duplication, effective sequencing, and alignment to capacity and strategy.
- Ensure the design and development of credentialling products across all modalities to meet the diverse needs of global IB and unaffiliated markets and constraints of the credential business model.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
- Act as a senior partner to internal stakeholders across Strategy, Community, Partnerships &
- Development, Design, Delivery, and Government Consultancy.
- Represent the EDD portfolio in senior governance, strategic planning, and external forums, advocating for educator-centric innovation.
- Build effective partnerships that enable reuse, modularity, and adaptability of offerings across systems and contexts.
- Represent IB EDD in thought leadership forums, raising awareness and advocating for IB’s approach to professional learning.
Team Leadership & Culture
- Lead a high-performing portfolio team with a culture of clarity, learning, innovation, and accountability.
- Set clear priorities, decision rights, and expectations in a complex, matrixed environment.
- Develop talent and capability in portfolio thinking, market awareness, and product-led decision making.
Governance, Risk & Sustainability
- Ensure portfolio decisions meet IB standards for quality, equity, accessibility, data ethics, and sustainability.
- Proactively manage risks related to recognition, IP, digital delivery, localization, and reputational impact.
- Contribute to the long-term resilience and credibility of the Professional Learning business.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of the global education landscape, including K–12 systems, international education models such as the IB, and trends in teacher professional learning ecosystems and credentialing.
- Strong experience leading innovation portfolios, product strategies, or professional learning ecosystems at scale.
- Proven capability in go-to-market strategy, value proposition design, and market expansion.
- Credibility with educators and education stakeholders; experience working directly with schools or systems.
- Demonstrated innovation mindset: comfort with ambiguity, experimentation, and evidence-led decisions.
- Awareness of global trends in education technology, digital transformation, and the future of work for educators.
- Understanding of data analytics and how to use educator learning journey data to inform product development, measure impact, and drive continuous improvement.
Experience:
- 7–10 years in product management, innovation, or leadership roles, ideally in education technology or educator professional development.
- Direct experience working in schools, preferably as a classroom teacher or in a school leadership role, with a deep understanding of the realities and challenges faced by educators.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across diverse, cross-functional teams and build strong, trust-based relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Navigating complex organizational environments and finding constructive paths forward during times of ambiguity, challenge, or change.
- Managing or contributing to global teams in a matrix structure, demonstrating inclusive leadership and sound decision-making for work allocation.
- Experience working with or within the International Baccalaureate (IB) or similar international education organizations, with a strong grasp of IB philosophy, standards, and practices.
- Proven track record of launching innovative products or services from concept to MVP to scale, with measurable impact.
Education:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Education, Business, Product Management, or related discipline) required.
- MBA or equivalent desirable.
- Product management of learning products or agile certification (e.g., Certified Scrum Master, PMI-ACP, Pragmatic Institute, AIPMM) is an asset.
Technical Skills:
- Experience setting business requirements for digital offerings
- Experience with content design and development using SCORM, xAPI, and modular content standards
- Proficiency in Agile project management practices.
- Background in user experience design is a bonus
