The ERISA Consultant provides retirement plan consulting and technical support to Ascensus clients, addressing a wide range of compliance, plan design, and operational issues. This role conducts technical research, drafts and reviews customized employer‑level plan documents, and contributes to internal knowledge sharing and training. The ERISA Consultant also participates in special projects and collaborates with senior team members to continue developing advanced technical skills and consulting capabilities.

Section 2: Job Functions, Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Consulting

  • Provide consulting services to internal and external clients on ERISA compliance, operational issues, plan design considerations, and correction methodologies.

  • Demonstrate a solid and growing knowledge of retirement plan regulations and applicable regulatory agencies (e.g., DOL, IRS).

  • Maintain working knowledge of Ascensus sponsored plan documents, notices, forms, and internal consulting resources.

Training

  • Contribute to internal training by presenting on foundational or intermediate topics.

  • Assist in delivering internal technical updates or participating in team knowledge‑sharing sessions.

Course Development

  • Help review, revise, or develop basic and intermediate training modules under the direction of senior team members.

Employer‑Level Document Drafting

  • Draft customized 401(k) and 403(b) employer‑level plan documents using the Ascensus Plan Adoption System (PAS).

  • Propose standard or moderately custom language to meet client needs while maintaining compliance.

Plan Document Reviews & Analysis

  • Conduct thorough reviews of individually designed and other complex retirement plan documents with oversight as needed.

  • Assist with translating and mapping non‑Ascensus plan documents into Ascensus format.

  • Support plan comparison and protected benefit review work by preparing the analysis.

Policies and Procedures

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of business unit policies and procedures and apply them consistently in daily work.

Special Projects

  • Participate in departmental or cross‑functional projects, contributing technical input and completing assigned tasks on schedule.

  • May independently manage components of small projects with guidance and oversight as needed.

Research

  • Perform technical research on ERISA topics and present findings to the team.

  • Apply research outcomes to support client consulting and internal updates.

Technical Knowledge

  • Demonstrate strong technical knowledge of main plan types and developing expertise in additional areas.

  • Complete assigned industry credentials and certifications.

Industry Knowledge

  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of retirement plans, regulatory agencies, and basic investment concepts.

  • Continue building understanding of associated agencies (e.g., SEC, FINRA) and related laws.

Mentoring

  • Provide informal support or guidance to ERISA Analysts as needed in day‑to‑day workflow.

Continuing Education

  • Maintain and enhance technical and industry knowledge through continuing education.

SLAs

  • Meet departmental service level expectations for quality and timeliness.

Miscellaneous

  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field preferred.

Industry Experience

  • Typically 3–5 years of relevant Ascensus or retirement industry experience.

  • Demonstrated performance and mastery of ERISA Analyst responsibilities.
