Job Summary
The Epic EHR Development Lead is responsible for leading the design, configuration, development, and optimization of Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) solutions across clinical, operational, and revenue cycle domains. This role provides technical and functional leadership for Epic application development, integrations, and enhancements while ensuring alignment with clinical workflows, organizational strategy, regulatory requirements, and Epic best practices.
The Development Lead serves as a subject matter expert and team leader, partnering closely with clinical stakeholders, informatics, IT leadership, and vendors to deliver high-quality, scalable Epic solutions that improve patient care, clinician efficiency, and organizational performance.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and mentor Epic analysts, developers, and configuration teams across assigned Epic modules
- Serve as the primary technical and functional escalation point for Epic-related development issues
- Define and enforce Epic development standards, build guidelines, and governance processes
- Partner with Informatics, Clinical Leadership, and IT leadership to align Epic development with organizational strategy
- Contribute to Epic roadmap planning, optimization initiatives, and system upgrades
Epic Development & Configuration
- Oversee Epic application build, configuration, and customization across assigned modules (e.g., ClinDoc, Orders, Cadence, Prelude, Resolute, Willow, Beaker, Radiant, Cupid, MyChart, etc.)
- Ensure Epic development adheres to best practices, security standards, and regulatory requirements (HIPAA, CMS, Joint Commission, etc.)
- Review and approve design specifications, build documentation, and change requests
- Lead complex Epic enhancements, workflows, and clinical decision support development
Integration & Technical Oversight
- Guide development and support of Epic integrations (HL7, FHIR, Bridges, Interconnect, APIs)
- Collaborate with interface and infrastructure teams to ensure reliable data exchange and system performance
- Support testing strategies including unit testing, integrated testing, and user acceptance testing (UAT)
- Oversee Epic upgrades, patches, and special updates
Stakeholder Engagement
- Translate clinical and operational needs into technical Epic solutions
- Facilitate design sessions and workflow reviews with clinicians and business partners
- Communicate risks, timelines, and impacts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Support go-lives, stabilization efforts, and post-implementation optimization
Quality, Compliance & Performance
- Monitor system performance, data integrity, and user adoption metrics
- Ensure Epic configurations support patient safety, clinical quality, and reporting requirements
- Identify opportunities for workflow automation, standardization, and optimization
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience thinking critically and using deep problem solving skills to solve for a large matrixed organization with diverse healthcare delivery teams
- Experience presenting and problem solving with senior leadership
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 7+ years of Epic EHR experience, including hands-on build and configuration
- 3+ years in a lead, senior analyst, or supervisory role supporting Epic systems
- Active Epic certification(s) in one or more Epic modules
- Strong understanding of healthcare clinical workflows and operations
- Experience leading complex Epic projects or large-scale implementations
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Healthcare Informatics, Business Administration, or a related field
- Multiple Epic certifications across clinical and/or revenue cycle modules
- Experience with Epic upgrades, re-implementations, or enterprise optimizations
- Knowledge of interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, CCD, APIs)
- Experience in an academic medical center or large integrated delivery network
- Familiarity with Agile, Lean, or ITIL methodologies

Pay Range
The typical pay range for this role is:
$130,295.00 - $260,590.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
