Radicle Health is a collection of human services software products designed to foster collaboration and innovation, helping organizations better serve their communities. We believe technology plays a crucial role in the success of the human services sector, but no single system can meet the diverse needs of every agency. That’s why we’ve built Radicle Health as a home for mission-driven products that support organizations in delivering essential services. Under one roof, our teams learn from each other, test ideas faster, and think holistically about the individuals and communities we serve.

Foothold Care Management (FCM) is the leading software solution within New York State’s Medicaid Health Homes program. We strive to make our system smart and friendly, in order to let our users spend time on their real jobs: getting members the care they need. The idea of bringing good software to a field known for crappy software excites us.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team. This role requires a blend of management and actual engineering—while your primary responsibilities will be in people management and ensuring the team is running smoothly, about 40% of your time will be spent directly contributing to sprint work (via coding, code review, and thought partnership). We are looking for someone primarily focused on management but still passionate about coding, who will thrive on a small team where flexibility and wearing many hats are valued. If you are excited about our mission of improving health outcomes for underserved populations, and passionate about building great software and an enriching engineering culture, we’d love to talk to you.

About Health Homes

Health Homes is a major initiative to intervene with high-risk Medicaid patients. The program was launched in 2012, as part of the Affordable Care Act, and spends approximately $200 million per year in New York State. Health Home patients may have multiple chronic conditions, substance use challenges, or serious mental illness; they might be homeless or incarcerated. The goal is to improve health outcomes while also reducing total system costs, with a special focus on preventing unnecessary hospitalizations. Dozens of organizations, from large health systems like Sun River Health to community-based organizations like Housing Works and The Alliance, use our care management platform to collaborate on patient care and track progress for Health Home patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • People management: As manager of 4–6 engineers (closer to 4 to start), you empower individuals to identify and accomplish their goals. You give effective feedback: specific, actionable, and delivered in a way that resonates. You collaborate closely with our Product team to understand the nuances of upcoming work, helping match engineers with enriching projects. Invested in the success of other engineers as much as your own, you advocate effectively for the team’s wellbeing. And you manage with empathy: listening, striving to understand where others are coming from, and valuing different strengths and approaches.
  • Team process: After we have hired for this role there will be at least 9 engineers who contribute to our codebase, but some of our processes haven’t changed much since we were just 3 or 4. You find ways to make our team happier and more productive, and go about this thoughtfully, from weighing tradeoffs to building consensus.
  • Engineering: We are passionate about engineering, and want our managers to be, too! In addition to management, you roll up your sleeves to spend about 40% of your time on development work, building expertise in our product and stack. You care about quality, write code that is readable and maintainable, and model engineering best practices for the rest of the team. Demonstrating a high level of ownership over your work and the product, you take the lead on nailing down requirements, engaging stakeholders, and orchestrating feature rollout for your work. While building, you weigh tradeoffs and optimize for value, keeping our users’ interests in mind and helping ensure that we’re building solutions that make sense. While you don’t ship as much code as the pure ICs on the team, you play a valued role when it comes to code review, technical leadership, and providing thought partnership on challenging problems.
  • Communication: You take care to communicate thoughtfully and effectively with your teammates. Given that we’re a distributed team, you’re comfortable writing out your thoughts clearly and concisely. You see the value in asking good questions, and know when and how to ask for help. In group discussions, you’re a thoughtful contributor and listener.
  • Upholding our values: We’re proud to identify as a sustainable small business, not a startup seeking hyper-growth. We love that our tools are used by safety-net organizations that are fighting health disparities. And we're a friendly group of people who work together closely and care deeply about each other and our openness as a team. We are looking for a teammate who will thrive in this collaborative, mission-driven environment.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional experience in software engineering (including work on large, shared codebases and leading major projects)
  • Rich experience with full-stack modern web development (we use Rails, React, and Postgres: experience preferred, but not required)
  • 1+ years of experience as a people leader with direct reports
  • Experience with product, design, or the social services industry will be considered commensurate to the job qualifications

Other Information:

  • Compensation: $150,000-190,000 base salary
  • Location: Remote - within the US. A few teammates sometimes co-work in NYC, but most employees were remote even before the pandemic. Want to work from a cabbage farm? Excellent.
  • Benefits: 401k matching, medical, dental and vision healthcare coverage, unlimited PTO, paid holidays, volunteer time off, paid parental leave, etc.

Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location. More information about the salary range specific to your working location and other factors will be shared during the hiring process.
