Job Description

Join Our Team as a Commercial Counsel – Technology, Privacy and Emerging Business.
We’re looking for a creative, collaborative, and high-energy attorney who thrives at the intersection of law, business, technology, and data. This role sits within the Business Law & Compliance division of Allstate’s Law and Regulation department and offers the opportunity to counsel on a broad range of commercial matters—supporting Allstate’s emerging and service businesses, as well as advising across the enterprise on technology, privacy, and artificial intelligence (AI).
This position is ideal for someone who brings strong business acumen, embraces complexity, and enjoys partnering with cross-functional teams to navigate legal and regulatory challenges in innovative and evolving areas.

You will:

  • Provide real-time, strategic legal counsel on a wide array of business matters, including product development, marketing, sales, and emerging technologies.
  • Structure, draft, and negotiate complex commercial agreements—especially those involving technology, data, and service arrangements.
  • Advise on legal risk management and evolving regulatory landscapes in areas such as technology, commercial contracts, privacy, and consumer protection.
  • Contribute to enterprise-wide strategies by collaborating across business units, policy, compliance, and legal teams.
  • Anticipate legal issues and offer practical, innovative solutions in fast-paced and dynamic business environments.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and help assess the impact of emerging laws or regulations on business activities.
  • Help foster alignment between business goals and legal frameworks in regulated industries.
  • Navigate ambiguity with confidence and help shape emerging business models and opportunities.
  • Contribute to a culture of open dialogue and collaborative problem solving across a distributed, virtual team.
  • This is a remote role with travel required. While the position is open to remote candidates across the U.S., preferred home office locations include Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Charlotte, NC; or Scottsdale, AZ due to team collaboration and business travel considerations.
What a Typical Day Might Look Like:
  • Partnering with product teams on a new technology rollout or exploring a novel corporate structure.
  • Synthesizing insights from multiple legal experts to offer business-focused guidance in plain language.
  • Drafting complex data licensing agreements or leading the negotiation of strategic commercial deals.
  • Leading the implementation of a compliance or risk mitigation plan in collaboration with other departments.

What We’re Looking For:

  • We’re proud to work alongside a team of talented, mission-driven professionals. We’re looking for someone who:
  • Thrives in areas of law that are emerging, complex, and continually evolving.
  • Brings process-building skills and a desire to drive efficiency.
  • Contributes creative solutions and innovative thinking.
  • Balances both legal rigor and business pragmatism.
  • Values diverse perspectives and fosters inclusive collaboration.
  • We are fortunate to have a talented, engaged, and hard-working team and are looking for someone with those same qualities.  You might be the right fit if:
  • You thrive on advising in areas of law that are unsettled and constantly changing
  • You understand how to build new, efficient processes
  • You volunteer ideas and creative solutions
  • You are comfortable working with both a legal and business mindset simultaneously

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This job does have supervisory duties over individual contributors, contractors, consultants, and temps

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate and active bar membership in good standing
  • A minimum of 7 years of legal experience, ideally within a law firm or the in-house legal department of a mid- to large-sized organization.
  • Proven expertise in one or more of the following areas: commercial law, privacy, technology, artificial intelligence, intellectual property, corporate strategy, data governance, cybersecurity, international operations, and/or highly regulated industries.
  • Experience working within a corporate parent company and across a family of affiliated entities.

Desired:

  • Experience supporting a commercial business unit and/or professional experience beyond traditional legal roles.

Key Competencies & Functional Skills:

  • Strong leadership capabilities with a focus on collaboration, team development, mentoring, and strategic guidance.
  • Executive presence with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience managing departmental or legal budgets.
  • Solid project management skills, including the ability to prioritize and deliver across multiple workstreams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant legal or business technology tools.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Demonstrated discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • High business acumen, including the ability to assess and communicate legal risk in a commercial context and contribute to the development of business cases and return-on-investment evaluations.
