About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

The Chief Probation/Parole Officer (CPPO) supervises Probation/Parole Officers, Judicial Services Coordinators, and clerical staff in the unit. The CPPO coordinates and manages the unit’s workflow to ensure the effective implementation of Community Supervision goals and strategies. The CPPO handles daily operations and makes decisions about offender supervision. This includes case assignments, workflow coordination, scheduling, time tracking, and staff training. The CPPO also deals with discipline, conflicts, and complaints as needed, oversees team staffing and employee performance.
The offender population consists of individuals sentenced by the Court or ordered by the Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission. Offenders range from high-risk to low risk but many of them are high-risk and need careful supervision, reentry planning, and strong/ tailored case management.
This job is characterized by significant role modeling, coaching, reinforcement of pro-social behaviors, teaching pro-social and decision-making skills to staff. The CPPO ensures employees are skilled in their job responsibilities and fosters an environment that supports their professional growth and development. The CPPO is also responsible for holding staff accountable for their workload and case management and must effectively plan and direct tasks to meet deadlines.
The CPPO frequently engages in crisis interventions and meets with stakeholders, requiring a flexible schedule that includes regular 8-5 hours and the need to be available 24/7 for emergency calls. The CPPO is required to quickly analyze crisis situations and provide immediate responses, therefore, is often involved in developing and carrying out specialized control strategies independently. The CPPO may handle an active caseload with possible second-shift hours and/or may serve on EHA response team which includes on-call status and the need to respond to EHA violations.

1- Identifying offenders’ needs to provide effective supervision and swift, consistent responses to noncompliance
2- Maintaining calm and rational composure to focus on task at hand when dealing with difficult situations and individuals
3- Building and sustaining working relationships with officers, offenders, judicial officials, law enforcement officers, community agencies, the public, and co-workers
4- Communicating clearly and effectively in both oral and written form
The CPPO must possess the skills necessary to qualify annually with a firearm and unarmed self-defense, complete CPR annually, and be indirectly exposed to O.C. Pepper Spray as part of a training exercise.
The CPPO must reside within 30 miles of the county of assignment within 90 days of their start date.
