Job Description:
The Capacity Management Engineer plays a critical role in monitoring, evaluating, and optimizing the utilization of power, space, and cooling resources across assigned data center facilities. This role is integral to ensuring infrastructure efficiency, operational resilience, and alignment with both current demands and future growth projections. In close collaboration with Sales, Engineering, and Operations teams, the Capacity Management Engineer provides technical expertise in pre-sales assessments, risk evaluation, and deployment planning. By delivering timely and accurate feasibility analyses, this position helps enable strategic, high-impact colocation solutions that meet customer requirements while maintaining site-level capacity integrity and reliability.
This role requires a proactive and data-driven approach to capacity forecasting and resource management—ensuring that each deployment supports customer SLAs, business goals, and infrastructure best practices.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:
Capacity Monitoring & Optimization:
- Maintain accurate and real-time reporting on power, space, and cooling availability across assigned data center sites.
- Conduct thorough reviews of electrical panel schedules to ensure precise tracking of power distribution and utilization.
- Collaborate with facilities teams to identify and implement strategies that maximize efficiency in power and space usage.
- Interpret, update, and maintain single-line (one-line) diagrams to reflect changes in power infrastructure and identify potential risks.
Failover & Risk Assessment:
- Perform failover modeling and redundancy analyses to assess risk and identify infrastructure vulnerabilities.
- Partner with DCIM Engineers and Technology teams to implement automation tools that support real-time failover monitoring and alerting.
- Develop and refine contingency plans to enhance infrastructure resiliency and support business continuity across all data center locations.
Pre-Sales & Deployment Planning:
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to the Sales team by providing rapid and accurate colocation feasibility assessments.
- Support Sales and Service Delivery teams by validating power, space, and cooling availability for prospective and active deployments.
- Offer engineering guidance on cabinet power configurations, cooling requirements, and infrastructure compatibility.
- Ensure customer deployments comply with site-specific density standards (e.g., WPSF) and established kW limits per cabinet or cage.
- Evaluate proposed deployments to ensure alignment with site-wide capacity constraints, failover thresholds, and reliability standards.
- Utilize tools such as AutoCAD, Visio, and DCIM software to document and communicate capacity availability and infrastructure layout.
Collaboration & Process Improvement:
- Collaborate with the DCIM Technology Manager to drive enhancements in capacity analytics, reporting, and automation capabilities.
- Partner with the DCIM Operations Manager to maintain configuration accuracy, conduct audits, and enforce standards.
- Actively participate in capacity strategy sessions to contribute to infrastructure planning, operational efficiency, and future readiness.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and maintaining one-line (single-line) diagrams, panel schedules, and power distribution documentation.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Visio for space planning, cabinet layouts, and infrastructure mapping.
- Strong understanding of key data center engineering concepts, including airflow dynamics (CFM), rack density (WPSF), and data center thermal management best practices.
- Familiarity with panel schedule management, BMS/BAS monitoring, and power load analysis techniques.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in data center infrastructure planning, operations, or capacity management.
