About the Role
The Athletic is looking for a motivated, savvy reporter to cover women’s basketball on a national scale. This role is suited for someone who aims to be an authoritative voice on the sport and is relentless in the pursuit of breaking news in the WNBA, women’s college basketball and throughout the rest of the sport. The reporter should be a coachable self-starter who understands how to elevate familiar topics in the sport into substantive and compelling articles that differentiate our coverage. This person will also drive engaging and thoughtful discussion as a part of our quickly growing women’s basketball podcast.
Responsibilities
- Cultivate and maintain strong sources to break, confirm and advance national news.
- React quickly and eagerly in the moment to advance and elevate trending stories in the sport by providing additional reporting as well as commentary and analysis.
- Generate creative, high-level stories about the growing and complex business of women’s basketball.
- Contribute on multiple platforms, including podcasts, video and social media.
- Write with clarity and consistently deliver clean, skilled stories, both on deadline and on features and enterprise.
- Understand the sports’ advanced metrics and how to apply them to our coverage.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues as part of a beat team, as well as others throughout our large newsroom in numerous departments.
- Maintain productivity while balancing long- and short-term stories with an aim of having a lively mix of reporting expected of a top journalist covering the sport.
- Ability and willingness to shoot video on location as part of event coverage and important stories.
- Appear on The Athletic’s shows and series network to offer analysis and insight around biggest stories on your beat.
Requirements
- Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience.
- Established relationships with team and league staff and players across Women’s Basketball.
- Deep and comprehensive knowledge of the league's players and playing styles.
- Demonstrated ability to react quickly and authoritatively to league news and developments.
The annual base salary range for this role is $85,000 - 105,000 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location.
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
