A wetlands and watercourses field surveyor specializes in the study and assessment of wetlands, rivers, streams, and other water bodies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Site Assessment: Conduct field surveys to assess the condition of wetlands and watercourses, including vegetation, hydrology, soil types, and wildlife habitats.
- Data Collection: Collect quantitative and qualitative data on water quality, flow rates, biodiversity, and ecological health of wetland areas and water bodies.
- Mapping: Create detailed maps and reports of surveyed areas, often using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology to document the location and extent of wetlands and watercourses.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations regarding wetland protection and watercourse management. This may involve preparing reports for regulatory agencies.
- Habitat Evaluation: Assess the ecological value of wetlands and watercourses, including their role in biodiversity conservation and flood control.
- Restoration Projects: Participate in wetland restoration and enhancement projects, providing expertise on the best practices for re-establishing natural habitats.
- Monitoring: Conduct ongoing monitoring of wetland and watercourse health to track changes over time and assess the impact of human activities or natural events.
- Public Education and Outreach: Educate the public and stakeholders about the importance of wetlands and watercourses for ecosystem health and sustainability.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma or Degree from a program in Biology, Engineering, Geology, Environmental Sciences, or related discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of environmental consulting/field surveying experience.
- Professional experience working on infrastructure projects.
- Professional experience working with Section 401/404 regulations and wetlands.
- Wetland and Waterbody Determinations and Delineations pursuant to Section 401/404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act (RHA)
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers General and Standard Permits
- Wetland and Stream Functional Assessments and Mitigation Plan Development and Design
- National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Assessments and Documentation (Categorical Exclusions, Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements)
- Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work well in a team environment, including working with colleagues in different geographic regions.
- Regulatory familiarity with construction compliance scope preferred.
- Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or Wetland Professional In Training (WPIT) Certification preferred.
