Essential Duties / Principal Responsibilities
Strategy & Long-Range Planning
- Set, evolve, and steward the MCS strategic agenda, ensuring alignment with Xylem’s enterprise strategy, Long-Range Plan (LRP), and sustainability commitments.
- Lead the end-to-end strategic planning process for MCS, including annual and multi-year planning, scenario development, and translation of strategy into measurable priorities and outcomes.
- Define and maintain consistent strategic frameworks, KPIs, and leading indicators to assess progress against strategic objectives and inform leadership decisions.
- Support executive-level strategy reviews, operating reviews, and board-adjacent discussions with clear, data-driven insights and recommendations.
Portfolio, Growth, and Value Creation
- Lead portfolio strategy and optimization, including evaluation of market segments, adjacencies, technology platforms, and investment priorities.
- Assess and prioritize organic growth opportunities, including pricing and value creation initiatives, capability development, innovation focus areas, and operating model evolution.
- Partner with Finance and business leaders to ensure capital allocation and resource decisions align with strategic priorities and value creation goals.
Market & Competitive Intelligence
- Establish a centralized MCS approach to market and competitive intelligence, integrating internal and external insights.
- Continuously monitor and assess market trends, customer needs, competitive dynamics, regulatory developments, and technology disruptions (including digital, sensing, analytics, software-enabled solutions, and IoT).
- Translate insights into actionable strategy inputs and disseminate them effectively across MCS leadership and teams.
Strategic Initiatives & Execution
- Identify, prioritize, and govern enterprise-scale strategic initiatives across MCS, ensuring alignment with strategy, clear ownership, and measurable outcomes.
- Provide guidance, tools, and oversight for initiative management, including progress tracking, issue escalation, and benefits realization.
- Drive disciplined execution by embedding strategy into management routines, performance reviews, and leadership accountability.
Leadership & Influence
- Serve as a strategic thought partner to the MCS leadership team, influencing decisions through rigorous analysis, sound judgment, and compelling storytelling.
- Build and lead a high-performing strategy team, fostering analytical rigor, collaboration, and an enterprise mindset.
- Act as a bridge between MCS and enterprise functions (Strategy, Finance, Technology, Sustainability, Legal) to ensure alignment and effective execution.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred (MBA or graduate degree in engineering, computer science, economics, or a related field).
- Significant experience in corporate or business unit strategy, ideally within industrial technology, digital solutions, infrastructure, utilities, or adjacent sectors.
- Proven ability to structure and solve highly ambiguous, complex business problems, synthesizing qualitative and quantitative inputs into executive-ready recommendations.
- Strong understanding of the water sector or closely related industries, with exposure to digital technologies, sensing, analytics, software-enabled offerings, and IoT.
- Experience leading strategic planning processes, portfolio reviews, and enterprise-scale initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and align senior stakeholders across functions, geographies, and cultures in a global, matrixed environment.
- Strong executive communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey complex concepts to senior leadership and board-adjacent audiences.
- Passion for Xylem’s mission and advancing sustainable water solutions globally.
- Strong financial acumen, including the ability to assess business performance, evaluate investment and capital allocation decisions, and translate strategic choices into value creation outcomes.
- Strong experience in developing and driving digital and software-enabled aftermarket strategy, including commercial pull-through, recurring revenue models, and lifecycle value creation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in management consulting, enterprise strategy, or corporate strategy roles with exposure to high-stakes, time-sensitive strategic work.
- Experience partnering with Corporate Development, Finance, and Legal on inorganic growth from a strategy perspective (e.g., target themes, strategic rationale, portfolio fit), without owning deal execution.
- Career experience that reflects breadth across functions, geographies, or sectors, enabling strong enterprise-level judgment and adaptability.
