What you’ll do

General Matters

  • Manage a broad range of insurance and reinsurance focused legal and compliance issues, marshalling legal counsel and paraprofessionals to provide subject matter expertise as needed.
  • Take the lead on contracting with insurance and reinsurance partners and intermediaries, including strategic alliance agreements, MGA agreements, producer agreements, reinsurance agreements and reinsurance trust agreements.
  • Support insurance regulatory filings, including Insurance Holding Company Act Reporting and financial reporting as well as management of and corporate governance for Hagerty Re, Hagerty’s Bermuda-based Class 3 reinsurer.
  • Oversee development and implementation of the company’s data privacy roadmap and governance framework, working across multiple functional areas (including IT, marketing, media, marketplace) to achieve buy-in and compliance.
  • Support general commercial contracting review, drafting and negotiation.
  • Direct the execution of functional strategies set by senior leaders and establish operational plans with short- to medium-term impact on enterprise, corporate function or business unit results.
  • Provide pragmatic legal, compliance, and commercial advice and counsel to support overall legal and compliance strategy, working directly with business leaders to develop solutions to move their business plans forward.
  • Develop attorney and support staff, delegating and mentoring on assigned matters.
  • Develop solutions to complex or high-risk matters that can have a material impact to the company's business activities and financial performance.
  • Ensure company policies and strategies are in compliance with external regulations, internal policies and strategic initiatives.
  • As needed, assist with corporate governance matters, participating in board and board committee level activities.

Legal Support and Insurance and Reinsurance Industry Liaison for Regulatory Matters

  • Support business units in navigating the insurance and reinsurance regulatory landscape, leverage partners and industry trade associations where necessary, and develop direct regulatory contacts and relationships as needed.
  • Assist with strategy to strengthen regulatory presence.
  • Provide research, advice and other legal assistance to the organization on issues arising from actual or anticipated insurance regulatory matters that may affect company initiatives.
  • Assist with preparation of responses to regulatory actions and participate in hearings as necessary.

This might describe you

  • Required Education:  JD Degree; strong academic credentials.
  • Required Experience:  Proven, progressive legal experience in insurance and reinsurance transactional and regulatory matters, with major law firm or corporate law department.
  • Other Required Qualifications:  Applicable state bar admission
  • Have an outstanding reputation for ethics, integrity and the highest standards of professionalism. Able to:
    • Develop sustainable and effective networks both inside and outside the organization.
    • Adapt communication style to influence the situation and achieve the desired outcome.
    • Manage, resolve or diffuse difficult and/or sensitive situations with tact and professionalism.
    • Act as a catalyst to good effect by sharing information derived from a holistic view of the business and ensures those who need to know are fully briefed.
    • Understand relationships of the parts within an organization and identify and manage common themes and big-picture item.
    • Identify and develop multiple outcomes and piece together the impact of issues to the whole enterprise.
    • Be proactive and forward thinking.
    • Apply advanced risk management and risk-based decision-making skills, and advanced business and negotiation skills.
    • Provide leadership presence, mentoring and development to direct reports and have primary authority in personnel decisions.

  • This position can be worked as remote position within the United States.
  • Familiarity with public company requirements, including Sarbanes Oxley and key regulations, if applicable. For SOX compliant roles, responsible for designing, executing, and documenting internal controls where they have been identified as owners to prevent errors in financial reporting, processes, and business operations. Including attestation to the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all financial reporting data, where applicable.
