Job Summary

This is a highly visible and strategically critical position at a global public company.  The role drives initiatives around Novanta’s Acquisition strategy, as well as supporting the business segment in strategy development, and commercial partnerships. Novanta’s largest value creation opportunity is the deployment of capital towards acquisitions.  This role acts as both primarily identification and cultivation of an acquisition pipeline around Medical Solutions, as well as an intermediary between the Corporate Development team and the business.  

The role is ideal for someone who thrives in the acquisition / deal making environment and process.       

Primary Responsibilities

  • M&A Strategy & Target Identification:

Develop and lead the Medical Solutions acquisition strategy with senior leadership, identifying new targets in core end-markets and preparing business cases to present findings and recommendations on adjacent end-markets and attractive targets. 

  • Evaluate industry trends, competitor activities, and market dynamics to recommend strategic adjacent segments.
  • Conduct thorough research to identify category leaders and potential acquisition targets in the segments of interest
  • Develop and maintain the segment’s pipeline of inorganic targets with continuous review and prioritization
  • Provide recommendations to align acquisition targets with long-term strategic goals and Novanta’s business practices.  
  • Perform comprehensive analyses to support the deal thesis, including financial modeling to identify target company trends, ensure deal alignment with M&A criteria, and assess expense and investment requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess potential acquisitions and develop comprehensive business cases. 
  • Develop presentation materials to provide recommendations to the executive team and the board
  • Develop and Cultivate Relationships:
    • Establish and maintain relationships with potential acquisition targets, industry experts, and other key stakeholders.
    • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities to enhance visibility and gather intelligence.
    • Act as a Novanta representative and evangelist with key acquisition targets.
    • Stay abreast of emerging market trends and the business environment through proactive and strategic internal and external networking efforts for informed decision-making.
    • Leverage internal tools, external technologies, and advisors to source proprietary insights.
  • M&A Transaction:
    • Collaborate with the corporate development team during M&A transactions on financials modeling, deal value drivers, risk assessment and due diligence.
    • Support transaction flow through planning, sourcing, and evaluation, placing a strong emphasis on financial analysis, and compelling business case presentations.
    • Ensure that the Medical Solutions M&A activities are focused on value creation and are guided by robust financial models.
    • Work with the Business teams on M&A deals, identifying key value drivers, constructing persuasive business cases, and structuring to maximize their returns on invested capital and their financial contributions to Novanta.
  • Strategy Development
    • Act as the strategic thought-partner for the Medical Solutions business by understanding market dynamics, industry trends, competitive dynamics, and long-term growth expectations.  
    • Lead the Medical Solutions strategic planning process.
    • Think through long-term industry trends and issues to shape Novanta’s medical strategies and prioritize objectives for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Commercial Partnerships
    • Support assessment and negotiation of commercial arrangements with technology partners (i.e. JV, resell, license, private label, acquire, etc.)
    • Oversee the identification, evaluation, negotiation, and management of complex, high-profile partnerships that enhance our internal teams' capabilities and strategies.

Required Experience, Education, Skills and Competencies

  • +10 years total in M&A,
  • Experience in the life sciences or med device industry preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree and MBA.
  • Known for putting the company first, putting “we” before “me”, and working across boundaries.
  • Strong business acumen and significant experience, stature, and credibility in a complex technology-driven business.
  • Outstanding communication, analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Prioritize, focus and execute flawlessly with urgency. Make data-driven decisions with intellectual honesty and constructive debate. Assume responsibility to deliver long-term stakeholder value.
  • Strong experience producing and presenting analysis, valuation, and recommendation material to senior level management.
  • Strong skills in strategic and quantitative analysis, and complex project management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work directly with a broad group of senior executives throughout the company.
  • A demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally, manage teams, and supervise outside professionals.

  • Travel is required to global locations, including Europe, U.S., and Asia.
