Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale..
The Role
The Thermal Execution Virtual Design Development Validation (VDDV) team is a cutting-edge team, utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to lead the vehicle development from integrated Front End Air Flow solutions to Thermal Management for under hood/underbody thermal protection, for Electric Vehicles, Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles and Fuel Cell vehicles. The team is currently virtually validating Front End Airflow requirements and continuing to push the envelope as it relates to transient simulation capability. We are now moving to support software and calibration work virtually. This includes CIST - Compartment Interior Surface Temperatures to enable upfront calibrations. It is an exciting time to join the team!
The Thermal Execution VDDV Engineer VTM3D (Vehicle Thermal Management 3D) will now also include CIST support. They will build, run, and interpret results from various vehicle thermal models (ranging in complexity from a single component to complex powertrains to full vehicle systems). We are now looking to predict interior surface temperatures for various conditions like a warmup and cool down event.
The engineer will join a multi-disciplined team of engineers who perform thermal and fluid flow simulations of varying complexity to drive the design of vehicles and powertrains. Key elements of the job are:
What You'll Do
  • Perform Propulsion focused CFD simulations under various load cases to lead the design of the Propulsion system and its components.
  • Perform Vehicle level CFD simulations to lead the design of the vehicle for under hood/underbody thermal management and cabin comfort (including the cabin surface temperatures)
  • Work on future vehicle and propulsion programs with a focus on process efficiency and innovation
  • Pro-actively develop CFD simulations for new programs based on propulsion and/or vehicle content and functional objectives
  • Work closely with Propulsion Program Management Teams (PMT), Thermal/HVAC Development Engineers, Aero Performance Engineers, Studio, Calibration and Software Engineers, and Design Release Engineers to communicate simulation results and make design recommendations.
  • Execute multiple 'what if' simulations to guide the design process. Make design recommendations that may include material changes, component relocation, addition of shields, redirection of airflow, etc.
  • Fully engage in vehicle and powertrain development activity (including software and calibrations) and proactively take ownership of simulation activity to best guide the design team
  • Actively participate in the Thermal Development Performance Integration Teams (PIT) meetings
  • As required, use the Compartment Integration Teams (CIT) and Product Development Teams (PDT) to drive issues to resolution
  • Travel as required
  • There will be opportunities to work with test engineers at the Climatic Wind Tunnel, Aerodynamics Tunnel and at the Proving Grounds to develop an understanding of the models versus physical vehicle and powertrain performance tests. This is strategic to not only enable refinement of the analytical methods & techniques but build relationships.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • 5+ years of industry experience in Thermal and Fluid Flow Engineering & Sciences
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Thermal Sciences or Aerospace Engineering required
  • Working Experience with CFD & Heat transfer simulation software such as STAR-CCM+ and CAD software such as Teamcenter & UG-NX
  • Specific knowledge of engineering subject area (e.g. heat transfer and fluid flow) within job-related area
  • High level of oral and written communication skills
  • Great teammate with the ability to work effectively with engineers from other functional teams

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience in Thermal Development or Design and Release of Automotive Systems, especially Thermal related
  • M.S. and or PHD degree in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Thermal Sciences or Aerospace Engineering preferred
  • Experience in the Calibration/Software development process for Cabin Comfort
  • Familiarity with GM CAD Software
