ABOUT SPHINX

Sphinx builds software to solve complex national security problems in Space. Founded by engineers and technologists with deep experience across commercial and defense technology, we were frustrated by the outdated and insecure technology America's service members are forced to rely on. We're here to do better.

We’re focused on building modern, scalable products with an emphasis on using open source technologies. Expect talented, motivated, and interesting colleagues who emphasize collaboration, transparency, and individual responsibility.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Sphinx is hiring a Technical Writer to lead the development and management of technical documentation supporting complex software systems and space-ground programs. This role is critical in shaping how information is structured, communicated, and maintained across the organization, ensuring documentation effectively supports engineering workflows and mission execution.

This Technical Writer role is designed for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, engineering-driven environment and enjoys bringing structure and clarity to complex systems. You’re comfortable working with developers, understanding software architectures, and ensuring documentation meets both technical and compliance expectations.

In this role, you’ll partner closely with Engineering, DevOps, Product and Program teams to gather technical insights, translate complex concepts, and establish scalable documentation practices that support both development and operational success.

What you will be focusing on:

  • Leading the development of high-quality technical documentation for complex software systems and space ground architectures
  • Creating and maintaining system documentation, user guides, API documentation, and operational procedures
  • Translating technical requirements, architecture, and workflows into clear, concise written materials
  • Establishing and enforcing documentation standards, processes, and style guidelines across programs
  • Ensuring documentation aligns with government requirements, compliance frameworks, and contract deliverables
  • Reviewing and editing technical content for clarity, accuracy, and consistency
  • Partnering with engineers and program teams to gather and validate technical information
  • Driving documentation best practices across engineering and program contributors

You might be a good fit if you:

  • Have 5-10 years of experience in technical writing, ideally supporting software systems or highly technical programs
  • Have experience documenting software systems, APIs, or distributed architectures
  • Understand how to align documentation with government or regulated program requirements (e.g., compliance, deliverables, audits)
  • Are skilled at translating complex technical concepts into clear, structured documentation for varied audiences
  • Have experience using version control and documentation management tools, and can effectively maintain documentation throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Are highly detail-oriented with strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Can manage multiple documentation efforts and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Are comfortable working cross-functionally and asking the right questions to get clarity
  • Have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. TS/SCI security clearance

LOCATION

This role is remote with approximately 25% travel required to support activities in secure facilities in alignment with program requirements

COMPENSATION

The base salary for this role is between $106K-$175K (DOE)

BENEFITS

Compensation includes competitive salary, meaningful equity ownership, profit sharing, employer 401(k) contribution, and 100% employer covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents.
