Buf is building a new paradigm for APIs. Our open source and commercial software helps companies adopt Protobuf schemas throughout their stack, from gRPC APIs to streaming data in Kafka. Founded in 2020, we have raised money from leading investors, including Lightspeed, Tiger, and Addition. We’re deployed everywhere from small startups to the world’s largest enterprises, and we’d love your help growing even faster. Check out our open source projects on GitHub and join our Slack community to see what Buf is all about.

We're looking to hire an experienced technical writer to join our team!

While documentation is your primary focus, you'll also contribute to marketing content, developer relations materials, and help with social media copy. One week you might be documenting Buf Schema Registry policy features, the next you're helping Developer Relations Engineers craft an online workshop or proofreading a partnership announcement.

You will be responsible for:
  • Understanding the problems Buf’s ecosystem solves and clearly communicating how they are used to power schema-driven development.
  • Writing and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation for Buf's products, including conceptual overviews, tutorials, usage guides, and reference materials.
  • Validating documentation and example code for accuracy, working hands-on with our products.
  • Continually improving documentation consistency, clarity, and tone.
  • Collaborating closely with engineering, engineering managers, and marketing to review and refine documentation and other content from across the company.
  • Managing multiple concurrent projects while adapting to shifting priorities.
  • Contributing to marketing materials, blog posts, workshop content, and other developer-facing communications.
  • Working with Developer Relations Engineers to maintain a docs-as-code infrastructure.
About you

We're looking for someone who has:

  • 4+ years of experience writing developer-focused technical documentation, translating complex technical concepts into clear prose for developer audiences.
  • Expert-level writing skills with Markdown and experience with static site generators.
  • Proficiency with Git/GitHub workflows and docs-as-code methodologies: you're comfortable with pull requests, code review, and version control.
  • The ability to read and understand code across multiple languages (Go, TypeScript, Java, Python). You don't need to have written production code, but you need to follow along when engineers explain their work.
  • A strong editorial eye for detail, consistency, and technical accuracy.
  • Self-direction and the ability to manage competing priorities with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent collaboration skills—you know how to extract information from busy engineers and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Ideal candidates would also have:
  • Experience with MkDocs, Docusaurus, Hugo, or similar documentation frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Protocol Buffers, gRPC, or streaming platforms.
  • Background at a developer tools, API platform, or infrastructure company.
  • Experience creating workshop materials, tutorials, or other hands-on learning content.
  • Software engineering or development background.
How to apply

Please apply with your resume and a brief explanation of why you think this role might be a mutual fit, including links to writing samples that demonstrate your range (technical docs, blog posts, or marketing content).

Our hiring process is pretty lightweight and optimized for excellent candidates. We’ll respect your time and be as transparent as possible so that we can fail fast if it isn’t a mutual fit.

At Buf, we embrace diversity. We know that diverse teams make great teams, and we encourage people from all backgrounds and life experiences to apply. It is our goal to ensure that our workplace can be anyone’s workplace. If your experience isn’t an exact match for this job description, we encourage you to apply anyway!  We’re always looking to add diversity of thought and perspective to our team.

By submitting an application, you agree to the retention of your personal data for consideration for a future position at Buf. More details about Buf’s privacy practices can be found at: https://buf.build/resources/privacy/.
