Technical Senior Product Manager – Engineering Experience

Xero is a beautiful, easy-to-use platform that helps small businesses and their accounting and bookkeeping advisors grow and thrive.

At Xero, our purpose is to make life better for people in small businesses, their advisors, and communities around the world. This purpose sits at the centre of everything we do. We support our people to do the best work of their lives so that they can help small businesses succeed through better tools, information and connections. Because when they succeed they make a difference, and when millions of small businesses are making a difference, the world is a more beautiful place.

About the Team

The Engineering Experience portfolio empowers product and technology teams at Xero to deliver value faster, safer, and at scale by providing seamless platform solutions that simplify development, enable best practices, and eliminate friction. We are at the forefront of technology adoption for Xero and provide platforms and tools that enable rapid development and innovation from providing core solutions to eventing through to enabling the use of AI as part of engineering work.

About the Role

As a Senior Product Manager, you will play a key role in supporting and shaping key internal engineering initiatives.

You’ll be supported by a team of engineers to build or deliver solutions to other engineering teams at Xero. You’ll help shape what these solutions look like, set best practices, and engage with teams to support their adoption. By doing so, we accelerate other engineering teams to deliver value to their customers and reach their goals. You may need to engage with third party vendors to ensure they are aligned to our needs, and drive improvements.

Your impact will be measured by key engineering success metrics. You will be comfortable working autonomously where appropriate, with the support of the leadership team and your peers.

This opportunity will be working in a very technical space, so knowledge about the software development lifecycle, how it’s being impacted by generative AI, and its application in organisations such as Xero is essential.

What you’ll do

  • Work directly with internal customers (software engineers) to research, collect insights or validate understanding

  • Build relationships with the broader product and engineering teams, influencing without authority and collaborating and communicating effectively with internal stakeholders, and senior leadership

  • Participate in developing strategy for engineering focussed products and tooling to help realise Xero’s technical goals

  • Develop roadmaps with support from your teams to execute on the strategy, delivering value iteratively and rapidly

  • Take responsibility for managing risks arising from non-functional concerns including security, privacy, regulatory change and compliance, accuracy, responsible data use and availability

  • Monitor and analyse the ongoing performance of a product both from a commercial and customer perspective

  • Be comfortable and adaptable to a fast moving environment, keeping up with industry trends

  • Regularly liaise and engage with third party vendors for our suite of tools, identifying risks, and supporting adoption of features and requirements they may have

What you’ll bring with you

  • A background in working on software engineering problems, particularly in cloud based environments (we mostly use AWS)

  • Experience in agile processes, defining user stories, and managing work backlogs

  • Experience defining product roadmaps and supporting long term planning

  • Strong communication skills that can adapt to the right audience, clearly and concisely

  • This role is likely to have involvement with our generative AI tools and goals, so we have a strong preference for someone with experience in rolling out and supporting AI and agentic tools

  • Knowledge of using feedback and data to help inform decision making, and articulate clear outcomes through company and team metrics

  • Able to bring together multiple views and inputs, and turn that into requirements to support product development

Why Xero?

Our collaborative and inclusive culture is one we’re immensely proud of. We know that a diverse workforce is a strength that enables businesses, including ours, to better understand and serve customers, attract top talent and innovate successfully. We are a member of Pride in Diversity, in recognition of our inclusive workplace. Our goal is to make sure you feel welcome and supported to do the best work of your life.
