Your Mission

Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a leader for an Oracle engineering team responsible for a diverse portfolio of Database technologies that power our online games. Database Engineering deploys, maintains, and tunes all technologies that store our critical customer, gameplay, and development-related data.

The Oracle team is always ready to adapt to changing requirements by our game team customers, and work with them to engineer and support the technology solutions that best support a product’s development.

The Technical Manager is ultimately responsible for the ongoing maintenance and support of database technologies and systems currently in production at Blizzard. Additionally, they partner with development teams to design and constantly re-evaluate their technology stack to ensure that it is optimal for each service. Building relationships is key; an ideal candidate will be able to establish a rapport with Technical Directors and Server Engineering Leads across the company, enabling a cooperative relationship between Database Engineers in IT, and the engineers who design the applications that power our online games.

Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibility for the health and performance of all critical persistent database technologies at Blizzard with Oracle/Exadata

  • Management of public cloud database services, Oracle@Azure experience a plus

  • Strategic planning, road mapping, and setting a vision for the team

  • Overseeing technical projects that align with higher business and department goals

  • Collaborating with partner and customer teams on the architecture and health of their environments

  • Mentor, grow, motivate, and develop the team

  • Identifying opportunities for innovation by studying new products and industry trends

  • Fostering a culture of success and continual improvement

Requirements

  • · A minimum of 8+ years of experience in information technology and a minimum of 5+ years of experience leading teams in tech

  • A strong foundation in relational and non-relational DB theory

  • Experience with a wide range of Oracle offerings; able to draw upon past direct and indirect experience to successfully guide a large team to success

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to coach and develop managers and individual contributors in their organization successfully

  • Forward-thinking attitude and resistance to complacency, focusing on long-term goals and what IT at Blizzard will look like in years to come

  • Uptime-focused – our services are always available, performant, and reliable

  • Able to resolve conflicts or disagreements in a win-win fashion across all their sub teams

Pluses

  • Previous experience in database administration

  • Experience with application development, specifically interfacing with the database

  • Experience leading a large customer-facing database infrastructure supporting millions of end users

  • Experience working in an environment with multiple international teams around the globe

  • Degree in a relevant technology-related discipline

In the U.S., the standard base pay range for this role is $121,500.00 - $224,880.00 Annual. These values reflect the expected base pay range of new hires across all U.S. locations. Ultimately, your specific range and offer will be based on several factors, including relevant experience, performance, and work location. Your Talent Professional can share this role’s range details for your local geography during the hiring process. In addition to a competitive base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for incentive compensation. Incentive compensation is not guaranteed. While we strive to provide competitive offers to successful candidates, new hire compensation is negotiable.
