About the Role

Ontra is seeking a Technical Accounting Lead, reporting to our Senior Director, Controller, to join its Finance & Accounting team!

This role blends deep technical expertise with operational impact, requiring you to research, implement, document, and maintain accounting policies inline with US GAAP, drive system integrations, and collaborate cross-functionally to ensure accurate revenue reporting and compliance. You’ll analyze complex transactions, draft technical accounting memos, and optimize our tech stack to facilitate efficient and compliant accounting processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Revenue Recognition Implementation & Oversight: Implement and maintain revenue recognition policies in accordance with ASC 606, ensuring accurate and timely revenue reporting.
  • Technical Accounting Expertise & Application: Apply technical accounting principles to a multitude of areas beyond revenue, including commissions, unit-based compensation and equity, internal-use software, acquisitions/business combinations, investments, and any other complex transactions that a high-growth technology company may encounter.
  • Revenue Accuracy through Systems & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Engineering, Product, Sales, Legal, and Billing to ensure accurate revenue recognition by gaining a comprehensive understanding of contracts and product features and by optimizing data flow between billing and ERP systems.
  • Contract Review & Technical Memo Preparation: Conduct detailed reviews of complex contracts, prepare detailed technical accounting memos, and provide guidance on accounting implications.
  • Data Integrity & Reporting: Ensure the accuracy and completeness of revenue-related data, developing and maintaining robust reporting processes for financial analysis.
  • Process Improvement & Automation: Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to streamline revenue accounting workflows and enhance efficiency.
  • Product Revenue Analysis & Modeling: Analyze existing and future product revenue streams, collaborating with FP&A to develop financial models and forecasts to support strategic decision-making.
  • Audit & Compliance Support: Serve as a key liaison for external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations related to revenue transactions and accounting policies.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience: 5+ years in a relevant technical accounting role, demonstrating advanced expertise in a variety of accounting topics such as ASC 606 (revenue recognition), ASC 340 (contract costs), ASC 350 (intangibles and internal-use software), ASC 718 (stock compensation), and more.
  • Operational Ownership & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Proven ability to take end-to-end ownership of accounting process, proactively collaborating with Billing, Legal, Product, Engineering, Sales, and virtually every other department to develop a deep understanding of our existing products and product roadmap, processes, and data, driving towards the result of accurate reporting and timely GAAP compliance.
  • Systems Proficiency & Analytical Acumen: Expertise in mastering and enhancing a software stack, with strong Excel skills for advanced data manipulation and analysis.
  • Meticulous Attention to Detail: Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and precision in processing data and recording journal entries.
  • Proactive Problem-Solving & Advisory Skills: Ability to anticipate and address accounting issues, provide expert advice on complex transactions and bespoke contracts, and develop effective solutions.
  • Certifications: Bachelors or advanced degree in Accounting; CPA required.

Pay Transparency
Ontra takes individual candidate location, experience, and skills into consideration when determining compensation. The base pay range is listed below. Additionally, all positions are eligible for unit-based equity grants.

Some positions may be eligible for additional compensation, such as commission or other variable compensation structures, which is not included in the below base pay range.
