Job Description:

MarketWatch seeks an ambitious reporter to join its technology team to cover the business interests of Elon Musk, from Tesla to SpaceX, X, Neuralink, Xai and The Boring Company.

Musk is one of the most consequential CEOs of our time. He runs the world’s most valuable automaker, which is competing with rivals in the U.S. and China to dominate the electric-car market. Musk is also at the forefront of entrepreneurial efforts in the space and media industries, while also playing an important role in the AI revolution. In the Trump administration, Musk has played a key role in cutting the government workforce, even as his companies contract with and are regulated by US agencies.

This broad beat requires a curious and passionate journalist who is comfortable focusing on electric-vehicle manufacturers and moving horizontally to cover other industries. The unifying theme is Musk and the technological innovation that is impacting markets and the economy. It’s a chance to write about rockets, robotaxis and robots.

Keeping on top of developments in several sectors and providing fast-paced analysis on their importance will be crucial. The reporter will also need to be comfortable writing enterprise articles and collaborating with other MarketWatch teams, including our Washington bureau.

Candidates should have experience with business and markets reporting. The role will be based in New York, though other locations will be considered on merit.

Responsibilities:

  • Gracefully juggle multiple stories a day

  • Collaborate with colleagues and other departments

  • Write jargon-free, clear financial prose

  • Craft sharp and memorable headlines

  • Cover relevant corporate earnings

Qualifications:

  • Preferably three to six years experience writing on consumer-related platforms

  • Fluency in financial markets and technology

  • Deep interest in electric vehicles

  • Facility with SEO and audience strategies

  • Adept at finding unique angles off the news

  • A track record of writing unique, engaging stories

  • Experience producing distinctive coverage on a competitive beat

You will:

  • Thrive in a fast-paced newsroom

  • Work well under pressure and with other members of the team

  • Be a skilled, insightful and compassionate interviewer

  • Be meticulous in your copy and ambitious in your reporting

  • Pitch creative and compelling story ideas

About the Role/MarketWatch:

You will write accessible, reader-friendly stories on a daily basis, and also craft longer features, both anticipating and analyzing key technological trends. You will be part of a small team of writers, and report to MarketWatch’s Technology Editor
