Job Description
BAE Systems is hiring a Principal Survivability Engineer for our Sterling Heights site. This is a contractor conversion position and will be filled by a current contract employee.
The Survivability Engineer position, located at the BAE Systems Combat Vehicles site in Sterling Heights, will have a range of responsibilities generally in support of vehicles in design, integration and US Government testing. The role includes coordination of engineering activities for Survivability products on several programs concurrently. Survivability products include discretely assigned installations (e.g. armor and liners), and cross-platform protection solutions, e.g. survivability sensor integration, structure/armor integrated ballistic protection, signature management, underbody protection, vulnerability reduction, and chemical/biological protection. The Survivability Engineer will represent CV Survivability Product Team Leads by providing on-site technical support to the development, integration and test of sensor technologies. The ability to understand threat requirements (typically Classified), tied in with knowledge of the survivability best practices, will be applied to multiple vehicle programs. Survivability training can be acquired on the job and requires security clearance.
The Survivability Engineer will be supported by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) at off-site locations and will need to communicate effectively and understand and apply the tenets of Survivability to vehicle products. The Survivability Engineer will work with vehicle engineers (e.g., IPT Leads) as required to ensure that platform vulnerability reduction design intent (weldment integrity, fire prevention, compartmentalization, signature management, secondary effects, etc.) is maintained during prototype development and production. In addition, Sterling Heights POC will maintain an active relationship with USG DEVCOM GVSC and TACOM counterparts. The position requires interface with engineering, prototype shop, Government technical counterparts, and IPT Leads. In this role, you will travel to support meetings at other BAE Systems sites, US Army DEVCOM locations, DoW test ranges and supplier sites.
The Survivability Engineer will work with Engineering, Manufacturing and USG Live Fire Test (LFT) engineers, and Field Service Representatives (FSR) to deliver validate and support CV platform test assets (coupons, sensors, BH&T and Live Fire test vehicle) in accordance to requirements. Duties as follows:
  • Assumes primary responsibility as Survivability point of contact of all combat vehicle programs utilizing select survivability technologies.
  • Support Survivability IPTs during design, integration, manufacture and test providing engineering support to addressing survivability technology integration issues - ensuring survivability best practices are built into production line by design.
  • Provide timely response to problems identified on the production floor with appropriate corrective action taken to mitigate potential shortfalls during LFT events.
  • Support test activities. This activity would include support and witness of ballistic test activities that include armor coupon, Live Fire and Full-Up System Level Events. Must be able to work with IPT, engineers and FSRs in support of these activities to include test preparation, participation and post test analysis.
  • Must be able to reach back and utilize BAE resources to facilitate these activities; allows rapid response to address issues that may arise.
The Survivability Engineer will ensure that Survivability best practices (material selection, weldment quality) are applied. Emphasis will be placed upon ensuring compliance to established BAE Systems and program processes and procedures while achieving design quality and execution. The Survivability Engineer will be assigned to the respective IPT leads and report functionally to the Survivability manager. In addition to the technical aspect of this position, will at all times promote and maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with all safety rules of the company.
The individual would be responsible for tasks unique to Survivability as follows:
  • Survivability Support at USG/contractor test facilities
  • Survivability POC at Sterling Heights facility with access to Classified Annexes
  • Support engineering activities as liaison to Survivability IPTs
This individual will report to the Survivability functional manager and must have ability/flexibility to support and facilitate USG meetings and test activities based on program demands. Furthermore, the individual will continue to follow new manufacturing technologies but from a Survivability perspective. Added responsibilities would include:
  • Design, development and test of new technologies per ballistic requirements
  • Liaison between manufacturing, engineering and USG GVSC community
  • Apply knowledge (lessons learned) to new business opportunities

The need for a survivability presence at Sterling Heights with a survivability background will benefit both engineering and prototype development in the manufacture of combat vehicles.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 6 years work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This role requires regular presence in a manufacturing or fabrication environment. The incumbent must be able to access and safely navigate production areas which may include climbing, kneeling, stooping, and working in confined spaces. Must also be able to comply with all requirements including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company policy.
