BAE Systems is hiring a Principal Survivability Engineer for our Sterling Heights site. This is a contractor conversion position and will be filled by a current contract employee.
The Survivability Engineer position, located at the BAE Systems Combat Vehicles site in Sterling Heights, will have a range of responsibilities generally in support of vehicles in design, integration and US Government testing. The role includes coordination of engineering activities for Survivability products on several programs concurrently. Survivability products include discretely assigned installations (e.g. armor and liners), and cross-platform protection solutions, e.g. survivability sensor integration, structure/armor integrated ballistic protection, signature management, underbody protection, vulnerability reduction, and chemical/biological protection. The Survivability Engineer will represent CV Survivability Product Team Leads by providing on-site technical support to the development, integration and test of sensor technologies. The ability to understand threat requirements (typically Classified), tied in with knowledge of the survivability best practices, will be applied to multiple vehicle programs. Survivability training can be acquired on the job and requires security clearance.
The Survivability Engineer will be supported by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) at off-site locations and will need to communicate effectively and understand and apply the tenets of Survivability to vehicle products. The Survivability Engineer will work with vehicle engineers (e.g., IPT Leads) as required to ensure that platform vulnerability reduction design intent (weldment integrity, fire prevention, compartmentalization, signature management, secondary effects, etc.) is maintained during prototype development and production. In addition, Sterling Heights POC will maintain an active relationship with USG DEVCOM GVSC and TACOM counterparts. The position requires interface with engineering, prototype shop, Government technical counterparts, and IPT Leads. In this role, you will travel to support meetings at other BAE Systems sites, US Army DEVCOM locations, DoW test ranges and supplier sites.
The Survivability Engineer will work with Engineering, Manufacturing and USG Live Fire Test (LFT) engineers, and Field Service Representatives (FSR) to deliver validate and support CV platform test assets (coupons, sensors, BH&T and Live Fire test vehicle) in accordance to requirements. - Assumes primary responsibility as Survivability point of contact of all combat vehicle programs utilizing select survivability technologies.
- Support Survivability IPTs during design, integration, manufacture and test providing engineering support to addressing survivability technology integration issues - ensuring survivability best practices are built into production line by design.
- Provide timely response to problems identified on the production floor with appropriate corrective action taken to mitigate potential shortfalls during LFT events.
- Support test activities. This activity would include support and witness of ballistic test activities that include armor coupon, Live Fire and Full-Up System Level Events. Must be able to work with IPT, engineers and FSRs in support of these activities to include test preparation, participation and post test analysis.
- Must be able to reach back and utilize BAE resources to facilitate these activities; allows rapid response to address issues that may arise.
The individual would be responsible for tasks unique to Survivability as follows:
- Survivability Support at USG/contractor test facilities
- Survivability POC at Sterling Heights facility with access to Classified Annexes
- Support engineering activities as liaison to Survivability IPTs
- Design, development and test of new technologies per ballistic requirements
- Liaison between manufacturing, engineering and USG GVSC community
- Apply knowledge (lessons learned) to new business opportunities

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 6 years work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- This role requires regular presence in a manufacturing or fabrication environment. The incumbent must be able to access and safely navigate production areas which may include climbing, kneeling, stooping, and working in confined spaces. Must also be able to comply with all requirements including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company policy.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
- Experience with engineering survivability design, prototyping, production and test environments with relevant ground vehicle applications in the defense environment.
- Ability to evaluate and solve technical problems working with team members and others that require extensive investigation and analysis.
- Ability to conduct effective meetings, discussions and presentations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external individuals, including BAE Systems customers.
- Bachelor's degree with 6 plus years relevant experience in working in a manufacturing and US government test environments.
- Experience with use of Windchill (EPDM) and drawing repository (EDVS) systems, and Proficient with drawing, model and GD&T standards and application using CREO. #LI-DNI
