BigCommerce is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Engineer to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and maintaining large-scale distributed systems, while also playing a key part in integrating cutting-edge AI technologies into our current and future products. You will leverage your deep technical expertise to solve complex problems, drive technical excellence, and mentor other engineers.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the design, development, and evolution of scalable, reliable, and high-performance distributed systems

  • Drive initiatives to integrate AI technologies, including machine learning models and GenAI solutions, into our existing and future products

  • Collaborate closely with product managers and other engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Conduct in-depth code reviews, ensuring adherence to best practices, quality standards, and system performance

  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks, scalability challenges, and system reliability issues

  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in distributed systems, cloud technologies, and artificial intelligence, and advocate for their adoption where appropriate

Who Are You:

  • 10+ years of coding experience in one or more server-side languages (e.g., Python, GoLang, Java, Scala, PHP)

  • Proven experience in architecting, building, and maintaining large-scale distributed systems

  • Strong understanding of distributed system concepts, including consensus, consistency, and fault tolerance

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, etc) and microservices architecture

  • Solid experience with SQL, in-memory storage, and other data storage solutions

  • Familiarity with modern AI infrastructure (e.g., vector databases, model orchestration tools, inference frameworks, cloud-native ML workflows) is preferred

  • Experience building product solutions with LLMs and GenAI technologies is highly desirable

  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills

The exact salary will be dependent on the successful candidate’s location, relevant knowledge, skills, and qualifications.
