We are seeking an exceptional Staff Software Engineer to serve as the technical lead for our Consumer Experience (CX) team. In this role, you will be the primary technical decision-maker, architecture owner, and technical mentor for a team building the next generation of consumer-facing software products at Stord. You'll own the technical vision for our consumer experience platform, making critical architectural decisions that will shape how millions of customers interact with our merchants' brands.
As a Staff Engineer, you'll operate at the intersection of technical depth and organizational influence. You'll work closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and other Staff+ engineers to set technical standards, drive architectural evolution, and ensure we're building systems that can scale with Stord's growth. Your work will directly impact the merchant-to-consumer journey, creating seamless experiences that build brand loyalty and increase customer satisfaction.
At Stord, Staff Engineers are product-centered technical leaders who don't just build solutions—they identify opportunities, influence product strategy through technical insights, and drive innovation across the organization. You'll be expected to lead by example, mentor other engineers, and make decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term technical health. You'll possess a strong executive presence, conveying gravitas and leadership through polished communication, strategic thinking, and a demonstrated ability to influence and inspire others, earning recognition as a key technical leader and decision-maker within the organization.
You will join our strategic Consumer Experience (CX) group, the division responsible for building revolutionary software products that transform the entire merchant-to-consumer journey. Your technical leadership will help us create a seamless, branded experience that empowers our merchants' customers with proactive communication, greater control, and exceptional service.

What You'll Do
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership across multiple teams or initiatives, setting architectural vision and ensuring consistency in technical approaches

  • System Architecture: Lead the design of large-scale systems, making critical architectural decisions that balance technical needs with long-term business goals

  • Mentorship: Mentor engineers at various levels through technical guidance, code reviews, and design reviews to elevate the entire team

  • Engineering Excellence: Drive improvements in software engineering practices and system reliability, establishing and maintaining high-quality standards across the organization

  • Technology Strategy: Collaborate with leadership to shape technology strategy and establish technical objectives, policies, and procedures

  • Strategic Initiatives: Lead cross-team initiatives, providing clear vision and direction while empowering team members to excel in their roles

  • Problem-Solving: Address complex technical challenges using advanced analytical approaches and strategic thinking to drive decision-making

  • Risk Management: Identify operational risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure business continuity and resilience

  • Team Advocacy: Advocate for team members' successes and needs, ensuring their contributions are recognized throughout the organization

  • Customer Focus: Champion customer-centric strategies, aligning technical goals with customer needs to deliver exceptional experiences

  • Documentation: Create and maintain technical documentation, architecture decision records (ADRs), and design documents to enable knowledge sharing

What You'll Need
  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on modern web development and distributed systems

  • Deep expertise in system design, scalability, and architecture with a proven track record of designing and implementing complex, distributed systems in production environments at scale

  • Ability to influence and drive change across teams with demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives that span multiple teams or services

  • Strong problem-solving and strategic thinking skills with the ability to work on complex issues requiring conceptual thinking and a deep understanding of organizational objectives

  • Experience leading cross-functional projects with excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Proven track record of mentoring engineers at various levels, with specific examples of engineers you've helped grow

  • Deep understanding of full-stack development principles, scalable system design, and architectural patterns

  • Strong experience with cloud platforms (preferably GCP) and containerized applications

  • Experience building and maintaining large-scale web applications with high performance requirements

  • Experience making architectural decisions that balance technical debt, business needs, and long-term scalability

  • Executive presence and leadership with the ability to convey gravitas through polished communication, strategic thinking, and demonstrated ability to influence and inspire others

Bonus Points
  • Previous Staff+ or Principal Engineer positions

  • Previous startup experience, especially in high-growth environments

  • Previous logistics or supply chain experience

  • Deep experience with JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem

  • Experience with modern React patterns and state management (Redux Toolkit, Zustand, etc.)

  • Knowledge of testing frameworks and practices (Jest, Cypress, Playwright, Vitest, etc.)

  • Experience with real-time applications using WebSockets or Server-Sent Events

  • Experience with message queues and event streaming (Kafka, RabbitMQ, RedPanda, etc.)

  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, DataDog, etc.)

  • Experience with progressive web applications (PWAs) and mobile-responsive design

  • Knowledge of performance optimization techniques for web applications at scale

  • Experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration

  • Experience with API design and OpenAPI specifications

  • Experience leading technical design reviews and architecture discussions

  • Knowledge of performance optimization techniques for web applications
