Job Description
The Engineering Experience team at NBCUniversal is defining and building a paved road of tools and systems to accelerate and optimize software delivery practices company wide. Our organization values collaboration and continuous improvement, and we strive to provide an environment where all ideas are valued. We believe healthy organizations are built on accountability, transparency, and psychological safety. This means we commit to delivering work together, communicating clearly about status and risks, and treating failures as learning opportunities without blame or judgment.
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Release Engineering team, with a focus on building, operating, and improving the core platforms and workflows that enable teams across NBCUniversal to build, test, and deliver software reliably and securely. This role is highly collaborative and customer-focused, supporting engineering teams by providing well-designed tooling, clear guidance, and approachable expertise.
In this role, you will own and evolve shared Release Engineering platforms such as GitHub Enterprise Cloud, GitHub Actions, SonarQube, and Nexus. You will design and maintain GitHub Actions workflows and pipelines, help establish safer and more scalable authentication patterns, and work closely with Cyber and Identity partners to ensure platform guardrails are built into the system by default.
You will collaborate with application teams and cross-functional partners to understand real-world needs, reduce friction, and replace manual or ad hoc processes with standardized automation. As a Staff engineer, you will be a trusted and approachable point of contact for teams adopting Release Engineering tooling, offering hands-on support, clear recommendations, and thoughtful technical guidance while helping raise the overall quality and reliability of our software delivery ecosystem.
Responsibilities
  • Own and operate Release Engineering platforms including GitHub Enterprise Cloud, GitHub Actions, SonarQube, and Nexus.
  • Design, build, and maintain GitHub Actions workflows and pipelines used across multiple engineering teams and organizations.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce and eliminate use of personal access tokens (PATs) by designing and promoting safer, more scalable authentication patterns.
  • Partner with Cyber and platform stakeholders to define, document, and enforce approved approaches for authentication and automation.
  • Provide guidance to application teams on replacing PAT-based integrations with supported alternatives and best practices.
  • Evaluate and govern artifact management use cases in Nexus, including approving or rejecting requests based on supportability, risk, and long-term maintenance considerations.
  • Work with the IdP team to ensure identity integration, access controls, and entitlement models are correctly reflected in RelEng-owned tooling and workflows.
  • Plan and scope work by breaking down initiatives, providing T-shirt size estimates, identifying dependencies, and surfacing risks early.
  • Track work in Jira, keeping tickets up to date with clear descriptions, acceptance criteria, status, and ownership.
  • Collaborate with engineering managers and peers to support sprint planning, prioritization, and delivery commitments.
  • Ensure monitoring and alerting are in place for key systems and workflows and pipelines, with clear ownership and actionable signals.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and follow-up improvements related to workflows, integrations, and platform behavior.
  • Reduce manual and ad hoc work by building standardized automation and selfservice workflows.
  • Support and enable application teams with adopting GitHub Actions, Nexus, and related tooling through hands-on help, documentation, and clear recommendations.
  • Serve as a friendly, approachable point of contact for teams with questions or issues related to Release Engineering tooling.
  • Create and maintain documentation, runbooks, and operational standards for RelEng platforms and workflows.
  • Provide technical guidance and design input to other engineers on the team.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, developer tooling, or related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience building, operating, and supporting GitHub Actions workflows and pipelines in a production environment.
  • Experience administering and supporting GitHub Enterprise Cloud or comparable source control and collaboration platforms.
  • Experience operating and integrating developer tools such as SonarQube, Nexus, or equivalent code quality and artifact repository platforms.
  • Experience designing automation using APIs and scripting to reduce manual or ad-hoc operational work.
  • Experience implementing safer authentication patterns and reducing reliance on personal access tokens (PATs) through scalable alternatives.
  • Experience working with Cyber partners to translate compliance and risk requirements into platform guardrails and standard practices.
  • Experience collaborating with Identity or IdP teams on access controls, entitlement models, and SSO-based integrations.
  • Experience planning and tracking work using Jira or similar tools, including estimation and delivery tracking.
  • Experience operating shared platforms with responsibility for monitoring, alerting, incident response, and follow-up improvements.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, customer-focused approach when supporting engineering teams.
