The Staff Software Engineer will function as a team Tech Lead responsible for design, development, and delivery of complex software solutions aligned to business strategy and enterprise architecture within the EB IT Claims Capabilities ART. This role is a hands-on engineering leader who shapes solution design, drives high-quality execution, and ensures that modern engineering practices – including AWS-native services and AI / GenAI-enabled solutions – are consistently applied. This role is fundamentally focused on forward delivery, engineering best practices, architecture evolution, and technical leadership to ensure high-quality software products.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; and Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end solution design, technical direction, and delivery quality of complex software systems
  • Drive engineering best practices related to code quality, testing, security, accessibility, and performance
  • Lead hands-on design and development of cloud-native solutions, with strong emphasis across AWS and .NET-based platforms, with strong emphasis on event-driven patterns and scalable architectures
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership for both .NET (C#, .NET Core) and cloud-first services supporting critical business platforms
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex application, integration, and performance issues across distributed systems and APIs
  • Contribute to and influence solution design and architectural decisions, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, UX, QA, and platform teams to deliver business outcomes
  • Enable incorporation of AI / GenAI capabilities where appropriate, including intelligent automation, decision support, and productivity-enhancing solutions
  • Guide CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps practices across AWS and .NET workloads to support rapid, reliable delivery of new functionality
  • Mentor and coach software engineers, raising overall technical maturity and ownership

Required Qualifications

  • *Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • 7+ years of progressive, hand-on software engineering experience delivering enterprise-scale solutions
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a technical lead or senior individual contributor on complex product teams
  • Strong hands-on experience designing and building cloud applications with AWS preferred
  • Hands-on development experience with .NET technologies (C#, .NET Core) in enterprise environments
  • Experience with modern application architectures, RESTful APIs, asynchronous/even-driven patterns, and system integrations
  • Ability to lead technical design discussions and drive decisions across engineers and stakeholders
  • Experience working in Agile delivery models with modern CI/CD and DevSecOps practices
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts and trade-offs

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience designing and delivering distributed systems
  • Familiarity with modernizing or operating .NET-based enterprise platforms in cloud or hybrid environments
  • Familiarity with security, data privacy, system performance, and compliance requirements
  • Experience influencing technical direction beyond a single team without formal people-management responsibilities
  • Experience designing or implementing AI / GenAI-enabled solutions in enterprise environments
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, Step Functions, S3, DynamoDB, or equivalent
  • Insurance or financial services domain experience

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$116,000 - $174,000
