About the Role
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer – Full Stack to play a pivotal role in designing and delivering next-generation health insurance eCommerce solutions. This is a high-impact, hands-on technical leadership role where you’ll help architect and develop scalable applications and services that serve millions of users. You'll work across the stack—both frontend and backend—and mentor engineers while collaborating with product, UX, design, and data teams.
You should be deeply experienced in modern JavaScript frameworks and backend service development. You thrive in high-ownership environments and enjoy solving complex, real-world problems through clean, scalable code.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of scalable, secure, and high-performance full-stack web applications
- Drive the adoption of emerging AI tools and practices to enhance developer productivity and system intelligence
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver elegant solutions that improve business outcomes and user experience
- Guide the integration of third-party services, APIs, and platforms, such as GraphQL, CMS systems, and analytics tools
- Mentor engineers and enforce high code quality through reviews, architecture discussions, and best practices
- Partner with Product and UX to shape technical feasibility of upcoming features and experiments
- Implement SEO and accessibility best practices to support reach and inclusivity
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks in page speed, server responsiveness, and database performance
- Lead technical planning, roadmap discussions, and scoping of complex features and systems
- Champion the responsible and strategic use of AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor), setting guardrails for team use
- Demonstrate eHealth’s values in your behaviors, practices, and decisions.
Required Qualifications
- BS in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with significant full-stack contributions
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript, ES6+, Node.js, and modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Vue.js, or Next.js)
- Experience designing RESTful and GraphQL APIs, as well as integrating them at scale
- Solid understanding of backend frameworks, microservices, and cloud environments (e.g., AWS)
- Hands-on experience with HTML5, CSS3, flexbox, grid, and mobile-first responsive design
- Deep knowledge of web performance optimization strategies and core metrics (LCP, CLS)
- Strong database skills with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with design systems, component libraries, and CI/CD pipelines
- Familiarity with CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress)
- Experience the following tools is plus: CodeCanvas, PixelForge, or DesignDock
- Working knowledge of SEO, web accessibility (a11y), and browser compatibility standards
- Experience contributing to large-scale consumer-facing web applications
- Prior leadership in technical planning or leading cross-team initiatives
- Experience setting team-wide standards for safe and effective use of AI coding assistants

The actual base pay offered will depend on various factors including individual skills, experience, performance, qualifications, the department budget, and the location where work is performed.
