From MySQL and Postgres to Redis, Kafka, and S3, we ensure our storage infrastructure is consistent, reliable, and ready to support Gusto’s growing needs.
We’re looking for an experienced engineer with deep expertise in distributed data systems to shape the future of Gusto’s storage layer. You’ll take on complex migrations, lead architecture for high-scale systems, and set the standards for automation, resiliency, and security.
What You’ll Do
  • Design and implement production-grade storage platforms that optimize for resiliency, scalability, and usability across multiple data technologies
  • Lead complex migrations from legacy systems to modern, efficient designs with minimal disruption to customers
  • Define standards and build deterministic automation to ensure data consistency, integrity, and security
  • Continuously improve the on call experience by driving sustainable, longterm solutions that minimize operational overhead
  • Partner closely with product engineering teams to ensure our storage infrastructure empowers rapid and reliable product development
What We’re Looking For
  • 12+ years of engineering experience, including 6+ years in software development and architecture
  • 4+ years working with data streaming technologies, particularly Kafka
  • 4+ years working deeply with relational databases such as MySQL or Postgres
  • Strong coding skills at a professional software development level
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify and articulate complex ideas
  • Experience with cloud platforms AWS
  • Hands on experience with horizontally sharded database systems
  • Led major incident remediation efforts for large scale systems
  • Strong background in database migrations and performance optimization
  • Expertise designing resilient, maintainable systems and solving complex operational challenges
  • Proven ability to operate effectively amidst ambiguity with a systems thinking approach

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $164,000-$237,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $235,000-$265,000 for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
