MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

We are seeking a Staff Engineer to join the Cluster to Cluster Synchronization team. We are working to make migration of MongoDB clusters easy, fast, and reliable. This team is responsible for building scalable, performant, and low-downtime migration tooling such as mongosync, as well as maintaining managed migration solutions as part of the Atlas Live Migration service. Our tooling is critical for migrating enterprise workloads into Atlas. As a Staff Engineer, you will architect new solutions to continually evolving scalability, performance, and usability challenges.

This role can be based out of our New York City office or remotely in North America.

  • Spearhead the development of key improvements to migration tooling around performance, reliability, and data verification
  • Define the future evolution and vision of MongoDB migrations by working closely with Product Management, Product Design, Analytics, as well as other Engineering teams within the company
  • Work with stakeholders to identify business impact of focus areas, translating into the team's roadmap, then partnering with Engineering Leads to execute
  • Design, architect, build, and deliver key migration features for our customers
  • Improve our codebase, best practices, and design principles
  • Coach engineers with various levels of experience to help them deliver successfully and grow professionally
Candidate Profile
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, primarily focused on writing large-scale, distributed backend systems in a compiled language (Java, C#, Go, etc.)
  • Strong systems fundamentals, including multi-threaded programming
  • Familiarity with distributed systems such as consensus protocols, data replication, distributed transactions, and fault tolerance
  • Familiarity with database internals or building core components for data processing systems
  • Experience with at least one major cloud provider technology (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Has led the launch of new features and maintained them in production with a high level of observability and operational excellence
  • Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership for teams and/or projects
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills
  • Curiosity, willingness, and ability to quickly learn new things in the domains of computer science and software engineering
Success Measures
  • In the first month, you will have understood the high level architecture of MongoDB migration tooling and fixed a few bugs
  • In three months, you will have contributed to the development of a project slated for the next release of our migration tools, and diagnosed and fixed a few customer or testing-reported issues
  • In six months, you will be leading the development of a new feature and helping to mentor new engineers on the team
