As a key member of the Life, Health, and Annuity Product Concept and Design team, the Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for configuring, automating, and optimizing business systems that support the development and delivery of Life, Health, and Annuity products.
In this role, you will work both independently and collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external software vendors to translate business needs into effective technical solutions. A core responsibility of this position involves analyzing and interpreting product documentation to identify business rules, logic, and calculations, and accurately implement them within system configurations.
You will manage critical aspects of system setup and maintenance, including documentation, change control, configuration, data management, and related technical processes. Additionally, you will evaluate vendor platform capabilities, assess the impact of software upgrades, and recommend improvements to ensure systems remain aligned with evolving business and regulatory needs.
This position demands a strong blend of technical expertise, analytical skills, and business acumen to deliver scalable, compliant, and value-driven system solutions.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Configuration
- Ability to support configuration via software and/or scripting
- Contributes to the design and configuration of systems
- Ability to perform data analysis within the platform, as needed
- Ability to support reports and analytics
- Ability to work / problem solve collaboratively & independently
- Create, maintain, and improve processes, procedures, and documentation
- Serves as an expert on systems/platform configuration to peers and vendors
- Strong working knowledge of systems/platform configuration
Technical Acumen
- Working knowledge of Dev Ops principles to be able to make recommendations / implement Dev Ops for vendor packages
- Understanding of basic engineering and/or software development principles and terminology
- Working knowledge of common IT controls and processes (change management etc.)
- Working knowledge and proficiency in common operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.)
- Strong understanding of common technical protocols, constructs, and concepts including but not limited to: basic networking and networking protocols, servers, storage, databases, application hosting platforms, cloud computing, and common application development tooling
- Proficiency in at least one scripting language (bash, Python, etc.)
- Understanding and familiarity of common security concepts, practices, and tools
Managing Technology Vendors
- Leads the design, development, and maintenance of configurations on the vendor platform
- Ability to understand a vendor platform to be able to support configuration via software and/or scripting
- Ability to identify vendor release impacts and support release validation
- Participate in proof of concept / technology with the vendor (ex SOW process)
- Ability to support user provisioning and user account management (systematic or manual)
- Works collaborative with technology vendors to address system/platform and business needs
Collaborating within the team
- Lead and/or participate in teams collaboration session to provide technical expertise to solve problem/remove roadblock
- Lead and/or participate in product and release planning to help decompose work
Collaboration outside the team
- Networks outside of the team to grow skills and serves as subject matter expert
- Bring awareness to their role
- Influence how "system admins" can learn from each other and contributes to Communities of Practice
- Participates in team support rotation, if applicable
Coaching Others
- Provide mentorship guidance to junior team members to help them learn foundational configuration skills
- Provide trainings to the junior developers and groom them
- Provide domain expertise on systems/platform configuration in their area to junior engineers to help them learn/grow their skills and contribute as part of the team
General
- Understand and apply system & platform policies, standards, and processes to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability to Thrivent
- Assess and interpret policies and procedures and relevant business and technology processes
- Identify and recommend process improvements to streamline and enhance technology solutions
- Understand potential technology risks and respond appropriately
- Provide assistance with other deployed technologies, as needed
- Support regulatory examinations and internal audits, as needed
- Provide on call support of deployed technologies

As a Sr Systems/Platform Administrator you will interact with peers, engineers across product teams, vendors, and cross functional partners to ensure optimization of technology configuration and solutions.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical field or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years applicable experience. Engineering or experience administrating a business system is highly preferred
- Demonstrated leadership on mid-large scale projects
Preferred:
- Financial Services industry experience
- Experience working with Life, Health, Annuity, or Property & Casualty insurance products and systems, including familiarity with policy administration
- Experience automating and configuring complex business systems, translating business rules and product documentation into technical system configurations
- Learning agility, collaboration, analytical thinking, critical thinking, strong organizational skills
- Diagnose, troubleshoot & perform repairs on responsible technologies
- Knowledge and proficiency in the following technologies a plus: SQL, Java, SFTP, APIs
