Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S.
Cedar’s mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a “one-size-fits-all” approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.
As a Senior Software Engineer on our Data Acquisition team, you’ll play a key role in one of the most technically challenging and strategically important areas of our platform: integrating Cedar with the complex and fragmented healthcare data ecosystem.
The Integrations team is building a platform to ingest and normalize healthcare billing data to power multiple Cedar products. It’s a high-impact, high-complexity space involving real-time data flows, and an ever-changing web of EMRs, hospital workflows, and third-party systems.
You’ll thrive in this role if you enjoy solving for ambiguity, building durable systems in regulated environments, and working at the intersection of product, data, and healthcare infrastructure.
Why This Role Matters:The biggest blocker to innovation in healthcare is often access to data. Every hospital system, EMR, and billing vendor does things slightly differently. That complexity makes innovation hard to scale.
This role is part of Cedar’s strategic push to fix that. You’ll help evolve our integration layer into a modern, flexible platform—one that can serve as a foundation for every product Cedar builds going forward.
The Work You’ll Lead:- Design and implement resilient, secure data ingestion systems that integrate with hospital EMRs, billing vendors, and third-party platforms
- Help transition from batch ETL to real-time streaming integrations using standards like HL7, FHIR, and 835s
- Work closely with product, delivery, and commercial teams to understand integration requirements and translate them into durable solutions
- Allow Cedar to grow as a company by building a platform that empowers Product teams to acquire and manage their own data
- Collaborate on evolving the integrations architecture into a shared data platform powering multiple Cedar product lines
- Build tooling to accelerate the pace and reliability of new client integrations
- Lead technical design and execution for critical integration initiatives
- Own systems end-to-end: from client data specs to deployment and monitoring
- Mentor engineers across the team through code review, pairing, and shared design
- Contribute to Cedar’s engineering culture by sharing your experience around interoperability, data pipelines, API design, or testing standards
- 7+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally in healthcare or similarly complex and highly regulated data environments
- Experienced in designing, building, and maintaining robust data integrations
- Expertise in at least one major coding language
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity, legacy systems, and evolving requirements
- Able to work cross-functionally with product managers, client stakeholders, and commercial partners
- Skilled at breaking down complex technical concepts into clear, actionable communication
- Passionate about improving healthcare through better software
- Experience working directly with EMRs, clearinghouses, or healthcare billing systems
- Familiar with HL7, FHIR, 835/837, or similar interoperability standards is bonus
- Familiarity with real-time streaming tools (Kafka, Flink, etc.)
- Prior experience in regulated domains like healthcare, fintech, or insurance
- Exposure to platform-level thinking (e.g. designing shared systems across products)
- Comfortable using BI tools (e.g. Looker, Snowflake) to investigate data-level issues
Compensation Range and Benefits:
- Salary/Hourly Rate Range*: $195,500 - $247,250
- This role is equity eligible
