You will work primarily with PostgreSQL on AWS RDS, helping ensure the quality, integrity, and security of data across applications, analytics, and partner integrations.

·       Develop and optimize data models and schemas within AWS RDS (PostgreSQL) for transactional and analytical use cases;

·       Create and maintain data architecture documentation including ERDs, data dictionaries, and source-to-target mappings across business units;

·       Implement and maintain ETL and Reverse ETL processes for ingestion, transformation, and distribution of data across internal and external systems;

·       Ensure data security and compliance for confidential PII and PHI in accordance with HIPAA, internal governance standards, and AWS security best practices;

·       Support development teams with data access design through views, APIs, and performance-optimized SQL.

Administration (DBA)

·       Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and apply indexing, partitioning, and query tuning strategies;

·       Manage schema versioning, migrations, and change control in collaboration with application engineers;

·       Maintain database reliability through regular backups, restores, and performance audits in AWS RDS;

·       Implement and enforce data governance policies, access controls, and user permissions;

·       Analyze query execution plans and develop indexing strategies for optimal read/write performance.

Data Management & Analytics

·       Develop and maintain data validation and quality checks to ensure integrity across systems;

·       Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support reporting, ad-hoc analysis, and BI integrations;

·       Create and manage derived tables, materialized views, and summary datasets for analytics and partner reporting;

·       Assist in data migrations, version upgrades, and integration efforts as Carina expands to new markets and data domains.

·       Support internal stakeholders by providing SQL queries, datasets, and insights that inform business decisions;

·       Collaborate with external partners and vendors to integrate, transform, and exchange data securely and reliably;

·       Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Continuous Improvement

·       Stay current with AWS data services, PostgreSQL advancements, and emerging data engineering practices;

·       Propose and implement process and tooling improvements that enhance data reliability and developer productivity;

·       Contribute to building and documenting Carina’s data engineering standards, code review practices, and infrastructure-as-code patterns;

·       Champion a data-first culture by advocating for performance, security, and data quality throughout the organization.

You Have:

·       Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field — or equivalent practical experience;

·       5+ years of professional experience in data engineering, data infrastructure, or database development;

·       5+ years of hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining relational databases in PostgreSQL, preferably in AWS RDS;

·       Proven experience building and managing data pipelines (ETL/ELT, Reverse ETL) using SQL, Python, or orchestration tools;

·       Experience administering or tuning production databases (indexes, vacuum, query plans, schema versioning);

·       Hands-on experience with cloud services (AWS preferred: RDS, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch) and general infrastructure concepts;

·       Working knowledge of data warehousing, analytics, and BI tools (e.g., AWS Quicksight, Metabase, dbt, Looker, or Tableau);

·       Experience working in regulated or data-sensitive environments (e.g., healthcare, HIPAA);

·       Demonstrated SQL expertise with the ability to write, optimize, and troubleshoot complex queries in Postgres PL/pgSQL, including effective use of indexing and window functions;

·       Proficient in Python, JavaScript/Node.js, or another modern programming language commonly used for data and application development;

·       Deep understanding of data modeling, including relational schema design, normalization, and performance-driven modeling;

·       Experienced in version control & CI/CD, including Git, pull-request workflows, and database-focused pipelines changes;

·       Comprehensive knowledge of cloud data engineering including AWS data services such as RDS, S3, Secrets Manager and IAM along with secure networking principles;

·       Ability to collaborate with engineers, analysts, and product stakeholders to design and deliver reliable data solutions;

·       Resourceful and detail-oriented, with the ability to take ownership and diagnose complex SQL or system issues in production environments;
