The Opportunity 

Flock Safety is looking to add a Software Engineer III, Android Apps to our Device Software Android Apps team.  Our device software team is on the forefront of developing solutions for our network of over 100,000 headless infrastructure-free devices.  These aren’t your typical Android apps; this is the world of IoT, where your code lives in the real-world without an operator running day and night solving crimes all across the nation. 

In this role you will support our growth opportunities such as parking applications, DOT applications, and more as well as supporting our flagship LPR product.  Join a team of passionate engineers tackling complex challenges, including new use case development, system performance optimization, image quality enhancement, and integration of cutting-edge machine learning models.  Your work will play a vital role in creating safer and more efficient communities.

The Skillset 

  • Experience developing Android native apps/services in Kotlin

  • Experience building and shipping Android apps on custom hardware

  • Possess strong debug skills and experience with Android debugging tools

  • Proven ability to develop, test, and deploy new features in a pragmatic way

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

  • Proficient in Git

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience working with Android Camera2

  • Experience with Kotlin Flow

  • Experience working with Android NDK

90 Days at Flock

We are a results-oriented culture and believe job descriptions are a thing of the past. We prescribe to 90 day plans and believe that good days, lead to good weeks, which lead to good months. This serves as a preview of the 90 day plan you will receive if you were to be hired in this role at Flock Safety.

The First 30 Days

  • Day 1 Impact: You will be busy onboarding but we always like to have each employee have a “first day push of code.” It doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be huge, just important to start and finish something quickly.

  • Understand the existing device HW/SW app/service architecture 

  • Perform code reviews

  • Work with QA to understand the current test process

  • Increase test coverage for existing codebase

The First 60 Days 

  • Be the front end to Engineering Support

  • Deliver bug fixes and performance improvements

90 Days & Beyond 

  • Own feature development from requirements to deployment

  • Contribute to architecture documentation

  • Enhance platform testability

The Interview Process 

We want our interview process to be a true reflection of our culture: transparent and collaborative. Throughout the interview process, your recruiter will guide you through the next steps and ensure you feel prepared every step of the way. 

  1. Our First Chat: During this first conversation, you’ll meet with a recruiter to chat through your background, what you could bring to Flock, what you are looking for in your next role, and who we are. 

  2. The Hiring Manager Interview: You will meet with your potential future boss to really dive into the role, the team, expectations, and what success means at Flock. This is your chance to really nerd out with someone in your field. 

  3. The Technical Assessment: Our technical assessments seek to test the hard skills required to do the job. Engineers may find themselves in coding interviews or architecture discussions, sales roles may present mock discovery calls, and leadership roles may craft 90 day plans. Your recruiter will inform you of which assessment you will be assigned and ensure you are fully prepared for your big day. 

  4. The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. Depending on the team and role you are interviewing for, you may meet with several teammates as well as cross-functional partners. 

  5. The Executive Review: A chance to meet an executive and view Flock from a different lens. Be prepared to ask well-thought-out questions about the company, culture, and more. 

Salary & Equity

In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary between $142,000-155,000 as well as Flock Safety Stock Options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in-depth with you during our first chat.
