Software Engineer 4 (BE)

ROLE SUMMARY 

True Footage is looking for an experienced Backend Software Engineer to join our small, highly effective engineering team. You’ll work on the core backend systems that power appraisal workflows and consumer home valuations under the KBB Homes brand. 

This role is ideal for a senior, hands-on engineer who enjoys shipping real production software, improving existing systems, and working closely with product and frontend partners. You’ll join a small backend team supporting a revenue-generating SaaS product, where individual contributions have a visible and lasting impact. 

We’re a remote team building pragmatic, customer-focused software using Python, FastAPI, Postgres, and containerized cloud infrastructure.

ROLE DESCRIPTION 

• Build, test, and ship backend features end-to-end using Python and FastAPI 
• Develop and evolve API services that support our web applications and internal systems 
• Work closely with product managers and frontend engineers to translate requirements into reliable backend solutions 
• Debug and resolve production issues, taking ownership from investigation through fix and follow-up 
• Improve the reliability, performance, and maintainability of existing services through thoughtful refactoring and incremental improvements 
• Design and implement Postgres migrations and data model changes with an eye toward safety, backwards compatibility, and performance
• Contribute logging, metrics, and other observability improvements as part of normal development 
• Participate in code reviews and technical discussions to maintain a high bar for quality and clarity 
• Remote-first, primarily US-based team
• Small engineering group with a high degree of trust and autonomy
• Focus on pragmatic solutions, steady delivery, and improving real customer workflows
• Emphasis on collaboration, ownership, and sustainable software over novelty 

YOU BRING 

• Several years of professional experience building and operating backend services in production
• Strong experience shipping Python-based APIs, ideally with FastAPI
• Solid working knowledge of relational databases, especially Postgres
  • Comfortable writing migrations
  • Familiar with query performance and indexing concepts
• Experience deploying and running containerized services in cloud environments
• Ability to work effectively in a shared codebase and collaborate closely with other engineers
• Comfortable handling ambiguity and helping shape solutions in partnership with product and design
• Strong sense of ownership and responsibility for the software you ship
• Curious and engaged about both technical systems and product requirements, with an eye toward understanding underlying goals and tradeoffs in each
• Clear, thoughtful communicator in a remote team environment

NICE TO HAVE

• Experience with background jobs, task queues, or data processing workflows
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and making incremental improvements to them
• Experience adding or improving observability (logging, metrics, tracing)
• Exposure to domain-heavy or data-intensive products
• Experience working on small teams supporting revenue-generating SaaS products
