About UN/COMMON
UN/COMMON is a Shopify-focused e-commerce agency that helps mission-first brands grow through bold digital strategy, clean execution, and meaningful online experiences. We are a remote-first team of developers, creatives, and strategists who value results, trust, and smart collaboration.
The Opportunity
We are hiring a Shopify Development Manager to lead technical delivery on client projects while supporting and mentoring our growing global engineering team. This is a hands-on role best suited for a senior Shopify developer who is ready to grow into formal leadership. You will own project outcomes from kickoff through deployment while remaining actively involved in architecture, review, and delivery.
Who You Are
You are an experienced Shopify developer who has led builds, supported teammates, and managed client expectations in a fast-paced, project-based setting. You want to grow into a leadership position that still keeps you close to the work. You communicate clearly, lead with initiative, and take ownership of both your code and your team’s output.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and mentor a distributed team of Shopify developers and QA professionals
- Manage technical delivery across multiple concurrent client projects
- Act as a technical lead, providing architecture guidance, code review, and support throughout the project lifecycle
- Collaborate with Sales and Delivery teams to scope and estimate projects
- Help maintain and improve internal systems, documentation, and code standards
- Write or review code when needed to support team velocity and unblock challenges
- Maintain clear, proactive communication with internal stakeholders and client teams
- Promote continuous improvement and technical growth across the team
Who You’ll Be Leading
You will lead a remote team of developers and QA engineers working across North America, South America, and Europe. The team supports Shopify and custom e-commerce builds and values autonomy, communication, and attention to detail.
Work Style
This is a fully remote role. Team collaboration typically occurs during North American Eastern and Central time zones. Flexibility is supported, but availability for real-time communication during standard business hours is preferred.
What You Bring
- 4 or more years of hands-on Shopify development experience including custom themes, storefronts, and app integrations
- Project or team leadership experience, even if not yet in a formal management title
- Expertise in Shopify’s technical stack including Liquid, APIs, metafields, Checkout Extensibility, Shopify CLI, and Functions
- Experience in a fast-paced agency, consultancy, or freelance environment
- Ability to lead technical conversations with clients and internal teams
- Working knowledge of QA best practices, version control, and GitHub workflows
- Clear and confident communication skills, especially when discussing technical tradeoffs with stakeholders
- Background in WooCommerce, Magento, or other e-commerce platforms is acceptable, but Shopify experience is essential
Nice to Have
- Experience with headless Shopify builds (Hydrogen or Oxygen)
- Familiarity with Node.js, Laravel, or Ruby on Rails
- Past experience in a Shopify Plus Partner agency
- Working knowledge of GA4, GTM, or cookie/privacy compliance tools
- Familiarity with tools like ClickUp, Notion, and Slack
This Role May Not Be Right for You If
- You have not built, led, or launched full Shopify projects
- You want a role that is strictly people management or strictly development
- You are uncomfortable in fast-paced, client-facing environments
- You prefer repetitive or predictable work over variety and technical complexity
- You do not enjoy mentoring others or taking ownership of delivery outcomes
What to Expect After You Apply
- Initial screening call with Talent Acquisition
- Interview with Director of Delivery
- Final interview with Chief of Staff
Compensation & Benefits
- $105,000 USD starting salary
- Fully remote work culture
- 23 paid time off days plus 10 company holidays
- Year-round half-day Fridays
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance (U.S. only)
- Paid parental leave
- 401(k) with 4% company match
- $500 annual employee stipend after one year
Employment Details
- Employment may be structured through Rippling or an Employer of Record
- You must be legally authorized to work in your country of residence
- Final candidates will complete a background check based on local regulations
Diversity & Inclusion
UN/COMMON is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome candidates of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful workplace where all voices are valued.
