The Senior Systems Administrator at Docker designs and maintains computing environments, ensures operational excellence, leads infrastructure projects, and mentors IT team members.
The summary above was generated by AI

Docker has been one of the most loved brands in developer tooling, trusted by more than 20 million monthly users and over 20 billion container image pulls. From solo founders to the world's largest companies, developers rely on Docker to build, share, and run their applications across our suite of products including Docker Desktop, Docker Hub, and Docker Scout.
We are a globally distributed, remote-first team building the tools that define how software gets built and delivered. As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default.

Docker’s IT team builds and operates the infrastructure and services that enable a global, remote-first organization to move fast, stay secure, and remain highly collaborative.

The Senior Systems Administrator is a technical expert and cross-functional leader who helps design, implement, and maintain the systems and networking environments that keep Docker reliable, compliant, and scalable as the company grows.

This role leads major infrastructure projects, mentors peers, and influences company-wide IT policy and standards.

This role is hybrid: you'll work 2-3 days onsite in our Seattle office, located in downtown Seattle.

As a Senior Systems Administrator at Docker, you will be responsible for the design, administration, hardening, and continual improvement of our compute, storage, virtualization, and networking environments. You will ensure operational excellence across Linux, macOS, Windows, and virtualized platforms; monitor performance and security; and lead complex infrastructure modernization projects.

You will mentor and provide technical direction to other members of the IT team and partner with security, compliance, and engineering teams to deliver reliable, scalable services for a global workforce.

We are only currently considering candidates who are located in the Seattle, WA metro area and are willing to work in the office 2-3 days/week.

Unfortunately we do not offer any type of immigration/visa sponsorship for this role.

Responsibilities
  • Recommend and implement improvements to systems and network configurations; define hardware and software requirements for those changes.

  • Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments, including hardware, systems software, applications, and configurations.

  • Monitor systems, virtualization hosts, and peripheral devices for performance, reliability, and security; determine when adjustments are required and coordinate with technical support staff and vendors.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues; diagnose faults, replace defective components, escalate complex issues appropriately, and research long-term solutions.

  • Design, configure, and implement tests across the IT stack (systems, endpoints), networking, and virtual infrastructure.

  • Manage identity and access tasks: resolve security/access issues and maintain the integrity of access control systems; leverage automation to improve services, and reduce overhead and errors.

  • Develop and maintain clear systems administration documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to other administrators and cross-functional project teams.

  • This role may require participation in an on-call rotation to provide support outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years professional systems administration experience (or equivalent) in production environments.

  • Strong hands-on experience administering Linux, macOS, and Windows desktop/server environments and endpoint management.

  • Experience with large-scale infrastructure upgrades.

  • Familiarity with cloud storage, high-performance computing (HPC) environments, and hybrid on-prem/cloud deployments.

  • Strong knowledge of identity and access management, least-privilege models, and security controls (experience working with security and compliance teams is highly required).

  • Excellent troubleshooting, communications, and documentation skills; comfortable working directly with end users and technical stakeholders in complex environments.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional projects and mentor less-experienced team members.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD, IaC, SDLC, version control, and automation languages is highly desirable.

  • Experience with leveraging AI tools for scale, and championing and executing AI-forward initiatives, integrations, and tooling is highly desirable.

  • This role is 100% full-time onsite in our Seattle office, located in downtown Seattle.

We are only currently considering candidates who are currently located in the Seattle, WA metro area and are willing to work in the office 2-3 days/week.

What to ExpectFirst 90 days
  • Drive completion of in-flight compliance and IAM initiatives; ensure IT services meet SOC 2 and internal access control expectations.

  • Take ownership of one or more strategic infrastructure projects and deliver measurable progress.

  • Establish clear runbooks and documentation for critical systems and DR plans, and demonstrate improved monitoring and alerting on high-value platforms.

Why you’ll enjoy this role
  • Work on a small, highly collaborative IT team that impacts every Dockhand in a fast-moving, remote-first company.

  • Opportunity to lead strategic infrastructure projects that increase scale, security, and operational efficiency.

  • A role that balances hands-on technical work, project leadership, and people mentorship.

Docker does not offer visa sponsorship for this role.

Perks

  • Freedom & flexibility; fit your work around your life

  • Designated quarterly Whaleness Days plus end of year Whaleness break

  • Home office setup; we want you comfortable while you work

  • 16 weeks of paid Parental leave (after 6 months of employment)

  • Technology stipend equivalent to $100 USD net/month

  • PTO plan that encourages you to take time to do the things you enjoy
